European Law Institute The European Law Institute, founded in June 2011 as an entirely independent organisation, aims to improve the quality of European law.

ELI is supported by the University of Vienna and is co-funded by the EU. ELI is an independent non-profit organisation established to initiate, conduct and facilitate research, make recommendations and provide practical guidance in the field of European legal development. Building on the wealth of diverse legal traditions, its mission is the quest for better law-making in Europe and the enhancemen

By its endeavours, ELI seeks to contribute to the formation of a more vigorous European legal community, integrating the achievements of the various legal cultures, endorsing the value of comparative knowledge and taking a genuinely pan-European perspective. ELI marks its 15th anniversary in 2026 with a series of events across Europe and beyond.

Yesterday's session, hosted by the ELI UK Hub, focused on digital assets and AI in legal practice, bringing together judges, practitioners, academics and policymakers to foster dialogue and shape the legal frameworks of the digital age.

Chaired by Prof Hugh Beale and Prof Eva Lein, the event featured contributions from ELI President Prof Teresa Rodríguez de las Heras Ballell on digital assets, and ELI First Vice-President Sir Geoffrey Vos on AI and the judiciary.

ELI President, Prof Dr Teresa Rodríguez de las Heras Ballell, participated in the Department of Justice’s annual flagship event: Hong Kong Legal Week, at the Judicial Conference ‘Building Towards End-to-End Digitalization.’ ⚖️💻

The conference was co-organised by the UNCITRAL: United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific and the Hong Kong International Legal Talents Training Academy of the Department of Justice. 🤝🌐

Prof Dr Rodríguez Heras de Ballell contributed to Panel 4: Current Trends of Dispute Resolution in the Digital Economy, where she spoke on the role of AI in Arbitration and its impact on the future of dispute resolution.

📢 ELI President Speaks at Hong Kong Conference on Secured Transactions Reform

ELI President, Prof Dr Teresa Rodríguez Heras de Ballell, participated as a speaker at the 8th Conference on International Coordination of Secured Transactions Reform, held from 27–28 November 2025 at the University of Hong Kong.

Prof Rodríguez Heras de Ballell contributed to the ‘Future of Collateral: Pathway to Digital Secure Lending’ panel, discussing how emerging technologies and digital tools are transforming collateral systems, access to credit, and the broader regulatory landscape.
The conference was organised by UNCITRAL, in partnership with the Asian Institute of International Financial Law (AIIFL) and the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law and provided an important platform to explore potential updates to the UNCITRAL Model Law on Secured Transactions and related texts.

A productive and insightful event highlighting the path toward modern, digital-ready secured lending frameworks.

📣 ELI President Addresses ELSA Switzerland National Council Meeting

👉 On 28 November 2025, ELI President Prof Dr Teresa Rodríguez de las Heras Ballell joined the National Council Meeting of ELSA Switzerland via video message during the Opening Session.

In her address, Prof Dr Rodríguez Heras de Ballell highlighted the key initiatives and ongoing work of ELI, encouraged ELSA Switzerland to deepen their engagement as Observer Members. She also introduced the ELI Young Lawyers Award, aimed at supporting and recognising emerging legal talent.
We value our continued cooperation with ELSA and look forward to further strengthening this partnership.
