This lecture performance features the two members of Alphabet Collection (AC) Mohammad Salemy and Patrick Schabus will weave histories together to present a general theory about the rise of Islamism. In this lecture performance they will illustrate the role of right wing, liberal and leftist intellectuals from the postwar period until the present time, in confusing the popular and emancipatory aspects of political Islam with its more reactionary tendencies. The two artists will present contradicting but parallel presentations, and show how Islamism, in contrast with its image, is never reactionary, local or nativist and always modern, international and global. They show how the emergence of Islamism cannot be separated from its philosophical and geopolitical exchanges with Europe and ideological legacies of communism, fascism and liberalism.

Mohammad Salemy is an independent Vancouver/Berlin-based artist, critic and curator. His writings have been published in e-flux, Flash Art, Third Rail, and Brooklyn Rail, Ocula and Spike. He is co-founder of The New Centre for Research and Practice.

Patrick Schabus is an independent Berlin based artist, filmmaker and curator. Schabus’ writings have been published in Spike, Art of the working class, engagée, Malmoe, artmagazine.cc and &&& Journal.

This event is part of the public programme accompanying the exhibition When Legacies Become Debts, curated by Azar Mahmoudian.

Between chaos and neurosis: for the creation of new algorithms in art

Starting with the advent of both high-quality video production and an ever more capitalizable art scene, contemporary art has become ever so clean. Gone are the dirty productions of art, and the punk-rock flavored dissemination of high culture. The marginalization of such forms and contents goes hand in hand with the contemporary neurotypical shunning of art brut which once glorified and overstated the importance of chaos and disorder in artistic production. While the rough strokes and harsh forms are themselves essentially purifiable ideals, we need a new modality through which a hybrid between the clean and dirty and the pure and impure can emerge.

Fear which is one of the most essential and ancient reflexes in humans, triggered by the presence of a stimulus operates with us on a very subtle level, but how well do we know its face? Fear mongering or “scaremongering” is the deliberate use of fear based tactics including exaggeration and usually repetition to influence public in order to achieve a desired outcome. It’s a tactic used to scare or put fear into those viewing a campaign/advertisement and influence the outcome based on fear. Most often fear mongering is used by social medias, in political campaigns for business. The manipulation of fear is done by means of symbolic instruments as terror movies and the administration ideologies that lead to nationalism. It is the strongest manipulating machine, acquiring different guises. How many times have you been surrounded by its signs ?

In participatory installation “Fear monger me” people were invited to interact with a topic, having dialogues and questionnaires, proposing one material object. In discovery of the roots or fear mongering, by public ineractivity, the term fear had been materialized,implemented into space, limitlessly transformed and defined. In installation the transmogrification of the most elusive reflection “fear” acquires tangible quises. Imagine fear has face, imagine it as a message, as personified creature or material object, as a text message or particular thing,magine you being fear?

A British force invades Zululand, without authorization by the British Government. The High Commissioner for Southern Africa, Bartle Frere had used the delay in mail between London and Cape Town, to time his letters so as to circumvent the Colonial Office's opposition to war.
