The 2010 Haiti earthquake provided a valuable lesson in post-disaster recovery.💡

On 12 January 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti, killing an estimated 300,000 people and displacing millions. Six years later, an earthquake of similar strength struck Kumamoto, Japan. While the physical shock was comparable, the human and economic outcomes were not.

The difference lay in recovery speed: In Haiti, tens of thousands remained displaced years later, and parts of the housing and infrastructure stock are still unreconstructed. In Japan, power and gas were restored within days, airports reopened within weeks, and households recovered rapidly.

Disasters do not end when the ground stops shaking. Slow recovery compounds losses, deepens poverty and erodes development. Fast recovery protects well-being and turns resilience into reality.

Evidence from the World Bank Group shows that low-income countries take over 50% longer to recover consumption than high-income ones. In fragile contexts, recovery can take decades.

Resilience depends on preparedness for recovery: risk-informed budgets, adaptive social protection, contingent finance and strong recovery governance; and these need to be put in place before disaster strikes.

Pour éliminer définitivement la poliomyélite, chaque enfant compte. Tant que le virus circule quelque part, tous les enfants restent exposés.

Grâce au partenariat entre le Ministère de la Santé et de la Population - RCA, UNICEF et d’autres contributeurs, près de 2 millions d’enfants ont été vaccinés lors de la campagne menée en juillet dans 25 districts sanitaires de la République centrafricaine.

Les progrès sont réels, mais la vigilance doit rester totale. Ensemble, poursuivons nos efforts jusqu’à ce que chaque enfant soit protégé.
