The Institute of Design Research Vienna (IDRV) was founded in Spring 2008 with the goal of making an independent, academically influenced contribution to the establishment of the new field of design studies. As a non-profit scientific organization, the IDRV was created to foster interdisciplinary and disciplinary discussions on concrete issues of the worldwide design community, especially regarding the areas of ecologically and socially sustainable design as well as design history and teaching.

The Regenerative Design Lab presents its work at Vienna Design Week: an interdisciplinary space for experimentation and new possibilities for action in design. Led by Harald Gründl, the Lab at the Institute of Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna brings together design theory and history with individual and collective design practice.

In collaborations with partners such as Weltmuseum Wien, ReGenerativa and Vitra, students explore regenerative design principles and develop new perspectives on design as a transformative practice.

The presentation is supported by BMWKMS as part of IDRV’s annual programme.

After a two-year tour across Europe, IMAGINE: Coral Reef. Regenerative Design continues its journey in India. The project presents regenerative design as a holistic approach that moves beyond sustainability, bringing together ecological regeneration, cultural and social transformation, and alternative economic logics as interconnected dimensions of design practice. In this new context, the exhibition opens another international space of resonance for IDRV’s work.

Dr. Andrea Augsten will give our next Open Lecture on March 10. As the new Professor for Management & Design at the New Design University , she brings a distinctive combination of design, strategy, and transformation expertise.

As a long-standing board member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Designforschung .de , and with experience from her doctoral research in the context of Volkswagen as well as her former role as Head of Design at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit -Gizeh, she offers valuable perspectives on how design can become effective within organizations, public institutions, and broader societal transformation processes.

It will be an engaging evening on design, change, and the strategic power of design thinking.

Regenerative Design – The Weltmuseum as a Future Laboratory, Regenerative Design Lab 2025–2026

In a collaboration between the Weltmuseum Wien and the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the ethnological museum is being reinterpreted as a laboratory for future, planet-compatible ways of living. Drawing on diverse knowledge systems, museum collections are approached as resources for developing forward-looking design strategies.

The resulting exhibition is now on display.

IMAGINE: Coral Reef. Regenerative Design, IDRV x EOOS 2023—2026

In India, Coral Reef enters into dialogue with local design cultures, scientific inquiry, and civic discourse, expanding perspectives on regenerative design through South Asian contexts.
The exhibition is accompanied by a workshop by from IDRV in collaboration with Sushant University, embedding regenerative design research within teaching, experimentation, and locally grounded knowledge systems.

IMAGINE: Coral Reef. regenerative Design
Curated by the Institute of Design Research Vienna with exhibition architecture and overall organization by EOOS, Coral Reef is conceived as a modular and adaptive exhibition format.

It responds to local contexts while remaining anchored in a clearly defined conceptual core shaped by articulated regenerative design principles that structure both content and spatial design.
