The name Zikkurat, which in old babylonian language roughly stands for "to rise" is a synonyme for the ancient Temples of Heaven in Mesopotamia. The term was not chosen by chance. Even since ancient times Babylonia stood for multiculturalism and all forms of cultural diversity. Our capital Vienna develops again (as it did over one hundred years ago) to a true melting-pot of cultures. This udeniabl
e fact harbors a tremendous thrust of intellectual and cultural innovations. Many institutions, organizations and associations are striving to satisfy the needs of cultural preservation. When we now put music into focus, operas, operettas, musicals, the associated concert halls and their orchestras get a lot of attention, while new trends in music, like experimental and modern music, as well as classical and traditional non-European or outside of Central Europe-based music, and even european music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, nowadays live a nearly shadowy existence. These musical genres could even be called subcultural. Zikkurat is dedicated almost exclusively to subcultural music, dance and literature. The cultural series are taking place in an extraordinary and at the same time exclusive location in Vienna: the Shâmànté. Located in the Weißgerberlände 22 in the 3rd district of Vienna, the Shâmànté is a private artist's workshop, available and rentable for exhibitions, rehearsals, classes, workshops, lectures, and private events.
