🌱 Mental health recovery is rarely a straight line and no single approach works for everyone. When young people face some of the greatest challenges of their lives, support can take many forms: healthcare, therapy, art and human connection.

As lead project manager Viltautė Žemelytė reminds us, what matters is being there with them, connecting, raising awareness and finding better ways to support their needs.

Healthcare clowns cannot treat or cure. But they can bring moments of relief during difficult days. Because taking a break from the struggle is not giving up. Sometimes, it gives us the strength to keep going and something every recovery journey needs 🌻hope🌻.

📈 One in seven children and adolescents in Europe lives with a mental health condition. Among girls aged 15–19, it is one in four. According to World Health Organization (WHO), the prevalence of mental health conditions among children and adolescents has increased by one third over the past 15 years.

These numbers are alarming and they call for new ways to support young people’s wellbeing. Research shows that art and culture can play an important role, creating opportunities for expression and a stronger sense of belonging.

🎈 This is at the heart of the project: exploring how art and creative approaches can support young people’s wellbeing, helping them create and thrive.

🔴 The Emergency Smile Programme is RED NOSES’ humanitarian response initiative, bringing specially trained clown artists to crisis areas around the world. Through artistic interventions, the programme supports emotional wellbeing, social connection, and resilience among people affected by challenging situations.

🔴 The Emergency Smile Research Project* is a pioneering study in Lesvos, Greece. It explores how healthcare clowning can support the mental health and psychosocial wellbeing of aid workers and unaccompanied minors. The project also contributes to a better understanding of the role of the arts in humanitarian response.

💡 For healthcare clowns, having the freedom for artistic exploration is essential. It opens the door to new creative approaches and unexpected connections. But exploration is also a thoughtful and intentional process and it means observing critically, evaluating carefully and understanding what works, what doesn’t - and why.

📚 The lessons gained along the way are too valuable to keep to ourselves. That is why, through , we documented a range of artistic tools used by healthcare clowns across Europe in their work with people with dementia and children with autism.
