Most people think the Statue of Liberty is purely American.

But her story actually begins in Egypt.

After traveling along the Nile in the 1850s, French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi became fascinated by ancient Egyptian monuments and imagined a colossal female figure standing at the entrance of the Suez Canal - an Egyptian woman carrying light into the East. He called the project: “Progress.”

He presented the idea to Egypt’s ruler, Khedive Ismail, but the country could not afford the project.

Years later, the concept was redesigned as “Liberty Enlightening the World” and gifted to the United States.

To bring the monument to life, Bartholdi worked with architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and engineer Gustave Eiffel, before he built his famous tower in Paris.

In 1886, the statue became the global symbol of freedom.

But its origins tell a much larger story about ambition, reinvention, and how civilizations shape the symbols we think we know best.

Still carrying cash? Mises would approve.

The Austrian School has always been skeptical of systems that depend on constant central coordination. Turns out your payment terminal does too.

Some books do more than explain economics.
They change how civilizations think.

📚 The Wealth of Nations - Adam Smith
Smith challenged kings, monopolies, and state-controlled trade.
His idea: prosperity grows when people are free to exchange, compete, and innovate.

📚 Human Action - Ludwig von Mises
Mises argued that economies are driven by human choices, not government directives. Without real market prices, rational economic calculation becomes impossible.

📚 The Road to Serfdom - Friedrich Hayek
Hayek warned that centralized planning gradually concentrates power and weakens society. Complex economies cannot be engineered from the top down.

Three books. One timeless debate about markets, power, and civilization itself.

Ideas shape civilizations. The right ideas change them.
