🔄 What happens to raw material when medical waste is sterilized and how can we adress this?

This was one of the central questions in our Green Stage presentation at IFAT 2026.

Sterilization is a necessary first step for infectious medical waste. But for circular economy concepts, safety alone is not enough. The material also needs to be understood technically.

🔬 Our research looked at how selected plastics react during the sterilization process — including changes in oxidation behavior and mechanical properties.

The results show a nuanced picture: sterilization can influence polymer properties, but the effect depends strongly on the material and on the property being measured.

But the good news is that these sometimes altered material properties can be enhanced!

📄 We summarized the topic in our latest blog post, including the full IFAT presentation by Andreas Felber.

At IFAT 2026 , MACS Product Manager Andreas Felber presented new insights into how steam sterilization affects the properties of medical plastics — and what this could mean for circular healthcare.

From risk to resource? ♻️

We discussed how advanced sterilization technology can help rethink infectious medical waste — not only as something to be safely treated, but as a potential starting point for future material cycles.

An important topic for the future of circular healthcare — and a conversation we are excited to continue. 🌍💡

Day 1 at IFAT – A Strong Start 🚀

Our first day at IFAT worldwide has been both insightful and inspiring. It was a pleasure welcoming so many visitors to our booth and engaging in valuable discussions around sustainable waste treatment solutions. 🌱

A special highlight of the day was the presentation by our Product Manager, Andreas Felber, at the Green Stage 🎤. The session focused on the behavior of polymers during sterilization—covering how mechanical properties change, what re-stabilization approaches exist, and how oxidation and material degradation are influenced in the process. The strong interest and thoughtful questions from the audience made this session particularly rewarding. 💬

We’ve captured a few impressions from Day 1—both from our booth and the presentation 📸—which we’re happy to share below.

We’re now heading into Day 2 and look forward to continuing the conversations.
If you’re at IFAT, feel free to stop by and meet us. 🤝

What can actually be processed in a MACS autoclave — and what cannot?
In waste treatment, this question comes up more often than you might think.

Not all waste streams are created equal. Not all technologies are designed for the same purpose.

And misunderstanding this can lead to:
▪️ operational risks
▪️ compliance issues
▪️ inefficient processes

In our latest blog article, we take a closer look at:
✔️ which waste types are ideally suited for MACS systems
✔️ where the technical boundaries lie
✔️ and why biological risk is the key decision factor

The goal is simple: clarity.

👉 If you're working with medical, laboratory, or bio-contaminated waste streams, this is essential reading.

Saving lives shouldn't cost the planet. 🌍♻️
The healthcare sector is one of the most material-intensive industries in the world.

Today, most of these resources end in smoke.
Burned. Lost. Forgotten.

We are here to change that.

At MACS, we don’t just build machines.
We build the bridge to Circular Healthcare.

Our vision:
A world where medical waste becomes a secondary resource.

How we enable this:
1️⃣ High-security sterilization
2️⃣ Intelligent shredding
3️⃣ Opening new recycling pathways

We provide the safety needed to make circularity possible in medicine🛡️

In our new image video, we’ll give you a closer look at our vision and show you what we stand for.

🎬 Watch our vision come to life:
MACS - the missing link in circular healthcare.

At IFAT worldwide, we look forward to discussing how advanced sterilisation technologies can play a crucial role in solving this challenge.

But this year, we’re not only exhibiting...

🎤 In addition to meeting us at our booth, we invite you to join a special presentation by our Product Manager - Andreas Felber.

If you are looking for innovative solutions in waste treatment or simply want to learn more about the future of sustainable waste management, the Green Stage is the place to be.

🤝 Let’s connect in Munich!

Whether you are a hospital operator, waste management professional, industrial partner, or sustainability expert, we would be happy to meet you.

🔄Strong industry exchange at the Lunchtalk “Circular Economy in Healthcare” (Kreislaufwirtschaft im Gesundheitswesen) in Berlin, Germany.

Our Product Manager, Andreas Felber, engaged with experts from regulatory authorities, research institutions, and clinical practice to discuss how medical plastics can be responsibly recycled despite strict hygiene and regulatory requirements. He also presented our sterilization solutions within the broader context of circular economy models in healthcare.

Staying closely aligned with regulatory developments and practical pilot projects is essential to advancing safe and compliant sterilization and recycling pathways.♻️

We appreciate the valuable exchange and look forward to contributing further to this important topic.🤝

2026 has started at full pace.

While many conversations happen around strategy and planning, most of our time right now is focused on ex*****on. Several projects are running in parallel, and the details matter.

Here are a few impressions from behind the scenes of one of the projects currently being advanced by the MACS team🚀

As 2025 comes to an end, we would like to take a moment to reflect on a year marked by growth, progress, and meaningful exchange!

Over the past months, we have taken important steps forward, strengthened relationships, and continued to focus on what matters most to us: delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable solutions for medical waste treatment. These developments would not have been possible without the trust, engagement, and dialogue with everyone who accompanied us throughout the year.

We would like to sincerely thank our partners, clients, colleagues, and all those who connected with us in 2025.

🎄MACS wishes you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
We look forward to continuing this journey together in 2026.✨
