Before finding safety, Svetla endured years of hardship as a so-called "dancing bear". 🐻💔

Rescued in 2007 alongside fellow bears Mima and Misho, she was forced to perform for tourists across Bulgaria's Black Sea coast and beyond. When she wasn't being used for entertainment, she was kept chained in her owner's backyard.

Years of exploitation took a heavy toll. Svetla showed clear signs of stress and was fed an unnatural diet of sugary treats, sweet drinks and even alcohol.

Fast forward to today, and her life couldn't look more different. 💚

Now 36 years old, Svetla is thriving at her forever home, BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa (ПАРК ЗА МЕЧКИ Белица). With her glossy coat, good health and calm nature, she's a wonderful example of the difference rescue and proper care can make.

Her favourite way to spend the day? Relaxing by the pond. And when it comes to enrichment, it's often the simplest things she loves most. A little honey spread on a tree by her caretakers is enough to make her day, and she'll happily stand on her hind legs to enjoy every last bit. 🍯🐻

1.5 million voices for animals. Now Europe must listen.

Earlier this week, we joined forces with Eurogroup for Animals, GAIA - Global Action in the Interest of Animals, Essere Animali and AnimaNaturalis Internacional in Brussels to call on Europe to finally take action for animals. 🐾

At the heart of our message was a simple question: how can practices that cause animal suffering still be legal in Europe? 📣

As the European Commission prepares to present its 2027 Work Programme, we're calling on EU leaders to move from words to action and strengthen animal welfare legislation.

More than 1.5 million people have already spoken out by supporting the Fur Free Europe European Citizens' Initiative.

Now it's time for decision-makers to listen.

Irish Ferries keep transporting unweaned calves! Two weeks ago, FOUR PAWS, Compassion in World Farming and Welfarm sent Irish Ferries a legal notice raising concerns about how unweaned calves are transported on its ships.
Irish Ferries has now responded. Unfortunately, the company has not committed to ending these journeys. 💔
Young calves need regular feeding and care. Yet they can face an 18-hour sea crossing, followed by many more hours on the road, leaving them vulnerable to hunger, stress and exhaustion.
Together with other animal welfare organisations, we will continue pushing to end this cruel trade.

A milestone for Bear Yavor, and an even bigger one for Bulgaria's zoos!

The future rescue of the 22-year-old bear from Zoo Lovech after more than a decade spent in a concrete enclosure marks an important step for Yavor’s welfare, but also towards improving conditions for zoo animals in Bulgaria.

➡️ For the past years, our team in Bulgaria has been running an important campaign calling on the government to improve the welfare and living conditions of wild animals kept in the country’s zoos. Some facilities fall short of providing sufficient species-appropriate spaces for the animals, and FOUR PAWS’ campaign has helped raise the issue on the political agenda and contributed to positive developments.

Bear Yavor’s rescue is a powerful example of how long-term advocacy and cooperation can drive meaningful change for animals.

🚑 The Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water has requested his relocation as part of ongoing efforts to improve living conditions for the bears at Zoo Lovech. This will enable the establishment to start the renovation of the other enclosures to provide the remaining bears with more space and better meet their species' needs.

As for Yavor, he will soon be able to leave the concrete to finally set paws on the green grass of our BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa. 🐻🌲

🐘 Veterinary guidance and support for elephant Madhubala
FOUR PAWS veterinarian Dr Amir Khalil is currently in Karachi, Pakistan, to assess Madhubala’s health at Karachi Safari Park and support improvements to her care and welfare.

Madhubala and her sister Malika are the last African elephants held in captivity in Pakistan. In 2024, FOUR PAWS helped transfer Madhubala from the unsuitable and isolated conditions at Karachi Zoo to Karachi Safari Park, where she was reunited with her sisters Malika and Sonia. Sadly, Sonia passed away shortly after the transfer. 💔

In recent months, Madhubala has faced significant health challenges, including bacterial and parasitic infections. At one point, she was even unable to stand up on her own, a critical condition for an elephant.

To support her health and welfare, several measures have now been implemented:
✅ Nutrition: An improved diet and nutritional support to help Madhubala regain strength and weight.

✅ Physical therapy and medical care: An updated medical protocol, regular health monitoring and hydrotherapy to support her recovery.

✅ Supportive sand bedding: Sand has been added to her enclosure to help Madhubala lie down and get back up as she regains strength.

Madhubala has shown encouraging signs of recovery. She can now stand and walk on her own again and is even beginning to play with her enrichment items. Her wounds have also started to heal.

Her sister Malika’s support is equally important. She stays close to Madhubala, providing comfort and companionship throughout her recovery. ❤️🐘

Strict adherence to the treatment protocol established by Dr Khalil and the technical committee is now crucial. Madhubala’s condition remains challenging, and her recovery requires ongoing dedicated care and support. FOUR PAWS will continue to provide veterinary guidance to the team at Karachi Safari Park.

Great day for animals 🎉Woolrich Europe goes fur-free and joins the Fur Free Retailer Programme!

The decision follows our joint campaign with the Fur Free Alliance last year, which saw more than 200,000 supporters email the company, alongside public demonstrations outside stores across Europe and the company's transfer to new owner BasicNet.

A huge thank you goes to everyone who raised their voice and helped drive this victory for animals.

Woolrich Europe the branch of International outerwear brand Woolrich has committed to stop producing new garments containing animal fur by December 31, 2026. This means that from January 1st, 2027, all new Woolrich Europe collections will be fur-free. Woolrich Europe is currently also taking an active role to expand its fur-free initiative to operations outside Europe, which represent a small portion of global sales. 🐾❤️

The move comes at a critical moment for the future of fur in Europe as the European Commission looks to respond to the Fur Free Europe initiative, which attracted more than 1.5 million signatures calling for a Fur Free Europe. As more brands turn away from using fur, the message to the Commission is clear: choose a Fur Free Europe.

Woolrich Europe's new fur-free commitment is a major step forward for animals and another powerful sign that the fashion industry is turning its back on fur. We congratulate Woolrich Europe and its new owner BasicNet on this compassionate and progressive move ❤️

Did you know that much of our wool begins with this kind of cruelty? 🐑
Live lamb cutting is the most severe routine mutilation of lambs in the wool industry.
Lambs, only a few weeks old, are restrained while pieces of skin and flesh are cut away from their hindquarters, without adequate pain relief if used at all. ✂️

They suffer unimaginable pain and some even die from it. 💔
Over 10 million lambs are subjected to this painful procedure every year.

Yet Michael Kors has still not made a public commitment to only sourcing certified wool that avoids this cruelty. 🩸
We’ve contacted them repeatedly, but if they won’t respond to us, let’s make sure they hear from you - tag Kors in our comments ! 🫵

Every comment makes it increasingly difficult for Michael Kors to ignore this issue. 📣

Moko Visits the Dentist 🦷

Tigress Moko, who was rescued by FOUR PAWS from the former Zoo Lujan in Argentina, recently underwent a specialised dental procedure to investigate a health issue affecting her wellbeing. 🩺

During the examination, veterinary dental specialist Professor Gerhard Steenkamp discovered infection and significant bone loss around one of her canine teeth, along with abnormal tissue extending into the nasal cavity.

The affected tooth was removed, revealing a mass attached to it and additional abnormal tissue between the tooth and nasal passage. Samples were collected and sent for laboratory analysis to determine whether the condition is caused by inflammation, infection or a tumour.

The procedure was primarily a diagnostic step aimed at identifying the underlying cause of Moko's condition and guiding future treatment decisions.

While awaiting the pathology results, Moko is recovering under close observation from the LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary animal welfare team, who are focused on keeping her comfortable and ensuring her wellbeing. 💚

This is only a brief snapshot of the ongoing work our onsite team is doing to care for the recently rescued animals and give them everything they need to settle into their new surroundings. 🌄

🐱 Tiny Kitten Found in a Plastic Bag 🗑️
Just imagine discovering a tiny kitten wrapped in a plastic bag. That is exactly what happened to a local volunteer in Bulgaria. 🇧🇬 After waiting for several hours, we came to the heartbreaking conclusion that the kitten’s mother was not coming back. As it was another hot day in July, we had to intervene to save the tiny kitten’s life. 🔥

Mousey weighed just 90 grams and was only around two days old. She was tiny and incredibly fragile, and she would never have survived on her own in the wild. Even though we had found her in time, there was no way of knowing whether she would pull through, especially as she was also infected with Giardia.

What ultimately gave Mousey a chance was the incredible dedication of our vet technician, Dr Kostadinova. You would not believe what she did for this little cat: getting up in the middle of the night to feed her, providing round-the-clock care, and giving her an immense amount of love and attention. 🍼

We are cautiously optimistic that Mousey will pull through. She is such a tiny but incredibly strong fighter.

Please keep all your fingers crossed for this little girl.
