Menschen für Menschen leistet seit 1981 „Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe“ in Äthiopien, wodurch ganze Regionen in Äthiopien langfristig entwickelt und unabhängig von fremder Hilfe werden. Gemeinsam mit der Bevölkerung werden Maßnahmen aus den Bereichen Landwirtschaft, Wasser, Bildung, Gesundheit und Einkommen miteinander verbunden und umgesetzt. Menschen in Gebieten mit einer Gesamtfläche von rund 60.000 km
² - was etwa zwei Drittel der Fläche Österreichs entspricht - profitieren mittlerweile von der Arbeit der Organisation. Menschen für Menschen wurde vom ehemaligen Schauspieler Karlheinz Böhm († 29.5.2014) gegründet und ist eine unabhängige, managementgeführte Organisation. Die Projektarbeit wird mit über 500 äthiopischen Mitarbeiter:innen durchgeführt. Der Verein trägt in Österreich das Spendengütesiegel, das jährlich von der Kammer der Wirtschaftstreuhänder verliehen wird. Menschen für Menschen has been providing “help for self-help“ in rural regions of Ethiopia since 1981. This focus on one country is the organisation’s particular strength: over 500 employees work on-site and implement comprehensive measures in the areas of water, sanitation and hygiene, sustainable land management, education, health, and human development together with the local population. Working with the people in these rural areas is central to all activities. They are involved in the planning and implementation of the projects right from the start. The objective is to transfer knowhow and techniques that allow inhabitants of entire regions to become independent of foreign aid and safeguard food security for the population. Today 6 million people in a total area of about 60,000 km² (approx. two thirds of the size of Austria) benefit from the work of the organisation.
