As the current Rotary year draws to a close, members of Rotary District 1910 gathered in the beautiful Austrian town of Klosterneuburg for the District Conference 2026.

The special event provided valuable opportunities for learning, exchange, fellowship, and inspiration as we prepare for the new Rotary year beginning on 1 July. A special highlight was the review of the past Rotary year by District Governor Ralf Peters, who also officially handed over leadership to his successor, Sabine Unterweger. We thank Ralf for his dedication and leadership and wish Sabine every success for the year ahead.

The conference also showcased several flagship projects from across the district. Among the most inspiring presentations was the keynote address by Professor Johannes Lindner on entrepreneurship and youth empowerment. His presentation highlighted the importance of entrepreneurial thinking, innovation, and creating opportunities for young people to actively shape the future. As entrepreneurship remains a key driver of a vibrant and sustainable economy, it is encouraging to see Rotary supporting initiatives that foster these skills and mindsets among the next generation.

We were also warmly welcomed by the Mayor of Klosterneuburg Christoph Kaufman and enjoyed an excellent cultural programme, including a guided tour of the historic Klosterneuburg Abbey and its renowned wine cellar — one of Austria’s oldest and most significant wine estates.

Several members of Rotary Club Vienna Maria Theresia participated in the conference, including: Olha Bosak, President-Elect, Ruth Freedom Pojman, International Service Chair, Hermann Jungmayr, Club Secretary, Alois Erwin Mair, Club Master, Sascha Mundstein, Foundation Chair and Webmaster.

A special thank you to our fellow Rotarian Alexander Rieck for contributing many of the event photographs.

To the Last White Spots — this was the inspiring title of today’s presentation by Martin Sailer from Rotary Club Mödling.

It was fascinating to hear about his expeditions to some of the world’s last untouched wilderness areas — from the Alps and the Himalayas in Nepal to Antarctica and beyond. More than mountaineering and adventure, Martin shared a deeply personal reflection on freedom, silence, solitude, beauty, and the powerful connection between human beings and nature.

One of the most memorable messages was that true fulfillment often comes when we approach our limits — physically and mentally — while remaining fully focused on our purpose. Passion alone is not enough: discipline, preparation, resilience, and perseverance matter just as much.

Martin described those moments near the summit, fighting for every step, completely exhausted yet fully alive and present, as “diamonds of life.” His stories reminded us how important it is to reconnect with nature, with ourselves, and with what truly gives meaning to our lives.

We are very grateful for his visit and for such an inspiring and thought-provoking presentation.

“Rotary Club” by Olha Bosak

This artwork, dedicated to the spirit and values of Rotary International, will be presented at the Art Charity Auction during the 1-st Rotary Summer Night Festival 2026, organized by Rotary Club Wien-Hietzing and Rotary Club Vienna Maria Theresia.

Olha Bosak’s painting carries a strong sense of structure, grounding, and united effort. The layered texture and earthy tones reflect the idea of people building something lasting together — communities, opportunities, stability, and hope.

The artwork embodies the spirit of Rotary: service above self, lasting impact, and caring for those who need support most. Its textured composition and the handwritten “Rotary Club” integrated into the painting create a powerful and distinctive visual identity.

We warmly invite Rotarians, companions, and friends to join us for this special Rotary Summer Evening and Charity Art Auction.

And if you would like to become one of the first owners of this meaningful artwork — get ready for the bidding.

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Rotary Club Vienna Maria Theresia, together with the Club DA, hosted a panel discussion on: “Media at the forefront of shaping a future at peace.”

In a rapidly changing geopolitical environment, the role of journalism has never been more critical. Reliable, fact-based reporting is increasingly challenged by large-scale disinformation campaigns that shape narratives and influence public perception.

An important takeaway from the discussion was the strong link between media freedom, democracy, and security. Independent journalism not only informs — it enables accountability, strengthens institutions, and contributes to more resilient societies. Open dialogue, access to trustworthy information, and active civic engagement are essential ingredients of peaceful societies.

As Baruch Spinoza once wrote: “Peace is not the absence of war; it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, and justice.”

Peace is the presence of active social and moral conditions that allow freedom, truth, and human dignity to flourish — and it must be actively protected.

This makes it all the more important to uphold the values that underpin peaceful and democratic communities, and to support responsible journalism in an increasingly complex global environment.

We are pleased to share a moment of meaningful international exchange within our Rotary network.

Our International Service Chair, Ruth Freedom Pojman, recently had the opportunity to meet with John Hewko, General Secretary and CEO at Rotary International. Their conversation offered a valuable exchange of perspectives and reinforced the strong connection between our local initiatives in Vienna and Rotary’s global mission.

She also had the opportunity to meet with colleagues from global grants, international service, and peace building teams to learn more about the impact of RI service projects and work for peace around the world. Such encounters highlight the importance of dialogue across regions and levels — linking local action with international vision and strengthening the spirit of collaboration that defines Rotary.

Yesterday evening, it was a great pleasure to join the Rotary Club Wien-Hietzing for their beautifully organized soirée dedicated to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on the occasion of his 270th birthday.

Set in the remarkable Kapitelsaal of the former Barnabite monastery at St. Michael’s Church in Vienna, the event created a truly inspiring atmosphere — deeply connected to Mozart’s time in Vienna and the enduring spirit of European culture.

A special thank you to Dietmar Kerschbaum for guiding us through the evening with both musical excellence and engaging storytelling, and to conductor Thomas Rösser for offering insightful perspectives on Mozart’s work and its lasting relevance today. The personal glimpses into Mozart’s letters, including those to Constanze, brought us even closer to the human side of this extraordinary composer — his humor, curiosity, and openness to the world.

It was a powerful reminder that Mozart was not only a musical genius, but also a lifelong explorer — constantly seeking the new, embracing change, and connecting across cultures and generations.

Many thanks to the President of Rotary Club Wien-Hietzing Paul Reitbauer for this exceptional evening and for creating such a meaningful space to celebrate Mozart’s legacy within the Rotary community.
