🎂 Happy Birthday Liszt! Born on 22 October 1811, Franz Liszt was one of the most spectacular pianists in history — a virtuoso who transformed the piano recital into a true public event. And who better to celebrate him than György Cziffra, whose phenomenal technique, electrifying energy, and improvisational flair made him one of the most extraordinary Liszt interpreters of the 20th century!

On this day - 10th October - in 1813… Giuseppe Verdi was born in Le Roncole, Italy. 🎼 Giuseppe Verdi became one of the most influential composers in the history of opera. His music continues to move audiences around the world with its dramatic intensity, unforgettable melodies and profound emotional power.

Among his greatest masterpieces is the Messa da Requiem — a work that brings together the grandeur of sacred music and the dramatic force of opera. In this extraordinary performance, Teodor Currentzis conducts Verdi’s monumental Requiem at the Basilica of San Marco in Milan, where the work was premiered in 1874 in memory of the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni.

Conducting from the piano means leading an orchestra directly from the keyboard — without a baton, through timing, breath, articulation, and eye contact. The pianist becomes both soloist and conductor, responsible not only for their own part, but also for the musical direction of the entire ensemble. It requires clarity, deep listening, flexibility, and real-time decision-making.

The project explores this demanding and rarely taught skill, inspired by Géza Anda’s own approach to conducting concertos from the piano.

György Cziffra playing for a small group of friends in Morsang-sur-Orge, France: practicing Liszt’s Étude No. 10 alongside a few finger exercises in the home movie from 1993. Recorded just a year before his death and five years after his retirement from the concert stage.

There is something deeply moving about seeing one of history’s greatest virtuosos in such an intimate setting, away from the big concert halls.

Born in Budapest to a poor Romani musician family, Cziffra was a true child prodigy, entering the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy at just 9 years old. Despite surviving WWII labor camps, imprisonment, and years of hard physical labor, he rose to become one of the most astonishing Franz Liszt interpreters of the 20th century.

The most important instruments in the orchestra are violas! Apparently, some conductors like viola jokes (not only them?)🙃🎻Paavo Järvi works with promising young conductors and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich during the second Conductors’ Academy, held in April 2022.

They are working on connection with the orchestra which helps to shape the music well. Conducting is not just about beating time. It is about listening, reacting, breathing — and sometimes knowing exactly when a joke can break the tension in the rehearsal room. 😄
