Winners of the Van Cliburn Competition – 7️⃣th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Fort Worth 1985 – José Feghali 🇧🇷

Born on March 28, 1961, José Feghali was a Brazilian pianist whose artistry combined virtuosity, warmth, and a deep understanding of musical color. In 1985, he won the Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, launching an international career that took him to major concert halls around the world.

In this masterclass, Feghali discusses one of the most subtle aspects of piano playing: pedaling. He emphasizes that there is no single “correct” pedal, encouraging pianists to adapt their pedaling to the concert hall, the instrument, and the composer. Speaking about Chopin, he highlights the importance of using different shades and types of pedal to create color, clarity, and expressive depth.

Feghali became a devoted teacher and mentor. Until his death, he served as Artist-in-Residence at Texas Christian University, sharing his experience and musical insight with a new generation of pianists.

Tragically, his life ended in 2014 at the age of 53. His passing was announced by both the Van Cliburn Foundation and Texas Christian University, leaving the piano community shocked by the loss of a beloved artist and educator.

„When I start working on something... for me, it’s difficult.” | „Technique doesn’t just fly away.” — Martha Argerich shares her thoughts about piano technique. This intimate footage comes from a May 1972 archive by Radio Télévision Suisse. It captures a 31-year-old Martha Argerich at her home in Jouxtens, sharing a candid look into her life and mind in a talk with her husband, conductor Charles Dutoit.

While the entire world looked at her as a technical goddess who could play anything effortlessly, she openly confesses that the process is a real struggle at first… It is a beautiful and deeply comforting reminder for all of us. The creative process is demanding, and the beginnings are rarely easy—even if your name is Martha Argerich.

Even the greatest musical geniuses of all time face self-doubt - and actually that’s how we can recognize them.

“Music is an art of emotion, of nobility, of dignity, of greatness, of love, of tenderness — but it must never sound pompous.” — Arthur Rubinstein.

A historic masterclass with one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. What makes Rubinstein so fascinating is that he speaks less about mechanics and more about humanity in music — sound, character, color, emotion and natural expression. Watching him teach is a reminder that piano playing is not only about precision. It is about communication, imagination and the ability to move people through sound.

What do you think about that approach?

“Fingers don’t play the piano.” — A fascinating András Schiff’s masterclass on Janáček’s ,,In the Mists”— about sound, imagination, timing and meaning behind every note. Schiff focuses on shaping harmony and sound as well as understanding character beyond pure technique.

One of those reminders every pianist eventually needs: we play on the piano with our whole body, not just with the fingers.
