György Cziffra playing for a small group of friends in Morsang-sur-Orge, France: practicing Liszt’s Étude No. 10 alongside a few finger exercises in the home movie from 1993. Recorded just a year before his death and five years after his retirement from the concert stage.

There is something deeply moving about seeing one of history’s greatest virtuosos in such an intimate setting, away from the big concert halls.

Born in Budapest to a poor Romani musician family, Cziffra was a true child prodigy, entering the prestigious Franz Liszt Academy at just 9 years old. Despite surviving WWII labor camps, imprisonment, and years of hard physical labor, he rose to become one of the most astonishing Franz Liszt interpreters of the 20th century.

The most important instruments in the orchestra are violas! Apparently, some conductors like viola jokes (not only them?)🙃🎻Paavo Järvi works with promising young conductors and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich during the second Conductors’ Academy, held in April 2022.

They are working on connection with the orchestra which helps to shape the music well. Conducting is not just about beating time. It is about listening, reacting, breathing — and sometimes knowing exactly when a joke can break the tension in the rehearsal room. 😄

1- An extremely rare photo taken during Rachmaninoff’s concert at the Brewer Field House on the campus of the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, November 13, 1935, before an audience of 6000 (!)
2- Rachmaninoff signing autographs after the concert. Photos of Rachmaninoff signing autographs also seem to be quite rare (note the left hand with glove and cigarette!).
3- Newspaper review.
4- Rachmaninoff backstage with James Thomas Quarles and daughter Betty. Quarles—the founding dean of the University of Missouri’s School of Music—was a highly respected educator, organist, composer and conductor of his day. A great lover of Rachmaninoff’s music, he often performed his own organ transcriptions of several of Rachmaninoff’s piano works. Quarles was also especially fond of Rachmaninoff’s choral works and would often perform them as well.

A rare glimpse into a masterclass with Lev Naumov (1925–2005), often called the „Professor of Professors.” As a star student of Heinrich Neuhaus, Naumov was a key figure of the Russian piano school, passing down elite musical wisdom to generations of virtuosos.

Here he works with a student on the dramatic and complex Scriabin’s Étude Op. 42 No. 5 in C sharp Minor (recorded in 1996). 🎼

Can you imagine one of the greatest conductors in the world feeling shy during his first rehearsal with the Berliner Philharmoniker? How it’s possible he was unhappy with himself after?

A powerful reminder, that exceptional career is built through courage, preparation, and experience.

In this conversation with Lars Vogt and Sarah Willis, Kirill Petrenko recalls his very first rehearsal with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He speaks openly about how shy he was, how overwhelming the experience felt, and how nervous he was standing in front of one of the world’s greatest orchestras.

Petrenko first conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2006, stepping in as a last-minute replacement for an indisposed conductor. Less than a decade later, in 2015, the orchestra elected him as its Chief Conductor, succeeding Sir Simon Rattle. He officially assumed the position in 2019.
