The winter season is almost over. During our last ski tours in Jotunheimen National Park in Norway we came up with an idea for the next ski season: a multiday ski tour in Kyrgyzstan and a winter q***r community event outdoors with the local organisation.

Zhenya is an avid mountaineer who has spent the past three years living in Kyrgyzstan—a place that has profoundly shaped his sense of identity and belonging.

When he first arrived, adapting to a new country wasn’t easy, but everything changed when he connected with local LGBTIQ+ initiatives through Pink Summits. During their Pride Hike, Zhenya experienced being surrounded by LGBTIQ+ people who shared his values for the first time in
his life. That moment of freedom, visibility, and community became a turning point, helping him embrace who he truly is.

A passionate lover of the outdoors, Zhenya has climbed Mount Elbrus, trekked through the Khibiny mountains, and completed numerous trekking routes across Kyrgyzstan. He values the safe, supportive spaces that outdoor communities can create, especially for LGBTQ+ people in
regions where acceptance is not always easy to find.

For Zhenya, every climb is also an act of visibility. He hopes his presence in these spaces sends a simple but powerful message: q***r people exist everywhere, and we can achieve anything. He wants to inspire others to feel stronger, less alone, and proud of who they are.

Outside of mountaineering, Zhenya works as a telecommunications engineer at a local mobile
operator. He is committed to living a meaningful life—growing, exploring, and building friendships across cultures and experiences. He believes deeply in the power of shared stories and hopes to bring openness, connection, and solidarity.

Amelia is an adventure filmmaker and photographer from the UK, with a life entrenched in the outdoors. A lifelong skier, enthusiastic climber and keen surfer, when she's not filming polar expeditions in Norway, you can often find her bopping around the mountains and coasts of Europe in her converted Sprinter Campervan with skateboard and camera in tow. Amelia is passionate about empowering the LGBTIQ+ community to experience the growth and joy access to outdoor spaces and wild adventures brings. She co-founded a community hiking group, and can't wait to bring her message to higher and higher peaks as a new Pink Summits team member.

Agus Guardiola, known as AJ, is a climber and q***r community leader from Valencia, Spain, now based in Manchester, UK.

As co-founder and festival director of the UK’s first q***r climbing festival 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈, Agus helped to create a community that celebrates the intersection of q***r joy and a love of climbing, providing a supportive space where LGBTQ+ climbers can explore the sport in an inclusive event. They take pride in the meaningful connections ClimbOut has fostered, cherishing the kinship with q***r climbers from diverse backgrounds.

Agus’s climbing journey began on the sunlit limestone of Costa Blanca☀️, sparking a passion that has since taken them across Spain and the UK, with an annual pilgrimage to the Alps. A mountaineer at heart, AJ thrives on big mountain days—whether scrambling, climbing sea cliffs, tackling alpine routes, embracing the challenges of winter climbing, or venturing into ski mountaineering. While they’ve experienced breathtaking landscapes, it’s the trust and relationships built with climbing partners in these shared adventures that are the true highlight
of their journey.

Beyond ClimbOut, Agus is a qualified Summer Mountain Leader and Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor and shares their love for the mountains, particularly the q***r community and other underrepresented groups. In their role as Nationally Elected Councillor for Mountaineering at the British Mountaineering Council (BMC ), AJ represents the interests of climbers, encourages member engagement, and advocates for a more inclusive outdoor community. Moreover, AJ is a team member of Pink Summits. Through climbing, mentorship, and advocacy, Agus is dedicated to fostering an inclusive climbing culture that welcomes and empowers everyone to explore the outdoors 💜

Nico Onore is a non-binary ocean sailor from Italy and the skipper behind Racing Against the Tide, a campaign leading toward the 2027 Mini Transat — one of the most demanding solo transatlantic races in the world. Sailing more than 4,000 miles solo on a 6.50-meter boat, the
Mini Transat is a test of endurance, seamanship, and absolute self-reliance, and Nico has embraced it as both a sporting challenge and a personal calling.

Their journey blends high-performance offshore sailing with a commitment to increasing q***r visibility in a sport where representation remains limited. By preparing for a race that pushes sailors to the edge of their physical and emotional limits, Nico is proving that authenticity and
resilience can coexist — whether navigating the Atlantic or navigating identity. For them, the ocean is a rare place where being true to yourself becomes an advantage, not a barrier.

More than a competitor, Nico uses their platform to show that there is space for everyone on the water, especially those who have not always seen themselves reflected in the sailing world. Through Racing Against the Tide, they aim to inspire others, challenge expectations, and carve
out a future where diversity and possibility can rise with every tide.

Simon Schindlmayr is a young medical student from Germany whose heart belongs firmly to the outdoors. Originally from the Heidelberg area and now living in Berlin, he balances the demands of studying human medicine with a deep passion for hiking, climbing, and even Latin American couple dancing.

His love for nature began early, evolving from climbing in a school club to tackling long-distance trails across Europe. Whether in the Black Forest, the Skye Trail in Scotland, the high route of the Pyrenees, or trekking across Denmark’s island of Møn, Simon seeks both freedom and simplicity in the wilderness. What he values most are the people he meets along the way and the shared moments that make every challenge lighter and every landscape more meaningful.

In 2023, Simon took on his big adventure: hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from Mexico to Canada, a 4,280-kilometer journey through desert, high mountains, deep snow, and long stretches of solitude. The PCT became not only a physical challenge but also a time for reflection, personal growth, and a deeper awareness of q***r visibility and acceptance—issues close to his heart.

From navigating snow-covered passes at night to building lifelong friendships under the most demanding conditions, Simon’s experiences on the PCT have shaped him profoundly. They reflect his resilience, curiosity, and the sense of freedom he finds whenever he steps outside and into the world.

Bart Bloem is a trailblazer in both the outdoor and q***r communities. In 2017, they embarked on a six-month solo cycling journey that took them through 26 countries and over 14,000 kilometers, starting in Málaga, Spain, and making a symbolic stop in Athens—a city known as the cradle of modern sports.

This epic adventure was more than a personal challenge: it was a bold statement that trans people belong in sports, and can chieve remarkable feats, even when society questions their participation.

Along the way, Bart connected with fellow trans activists, building networks of support, visibility, and shared
experience.

Beyond cycling, Bart is a UIMLA-certified mountain leader, guiding and advocating for inclusion in outdoor adventures. They have navigated not only mountains and long-distance roads but also the unique challenges that trans and non-binary people face in sports—from
transphobia during travel to systemic barriers in outdoor activities.

Bart’s journey bridges practical action and academic insight. They hold a PhD studying the experiences of trans and non-binary people in outdoor and adventure sports, combining research with lived experience to illuminate both the obstacles and opportunities for q***r
inclusion. Their work emphasizes the outdoors as a space where gender norms are less rigid and people can simply “be human.”

Whether on two wheels, atop a mountain, or in the classroom, Bart continues to advocate for visibility, safety, and empowerment for q***r people in sports and outdoor
adventure. Their story inspires not only trans and non-binary adventurers but anyone seeking courage to pursue their passion despite societal expectations.

***rheroesoutdoors presents Milla Schütz who is a trans mountaineer, skier, and paraglider pilot whose life is shaped by courage, visibility, and a deep love for the mountains. After coming out she began sharing her transition journey openly—offering guidance on hormone therapy, legal gender recognition, and blogging about her trans identity and her passion for outdoor sports.

Milla speaks openly about her challenges, but also about the freedom and resilience she finds in the mountains. Through her website and community work, she supports other trans people and advocates for inclusive adventure sports.

Milla’s goal is simple: to show that authenticity and outdoor passion belong together—and that everyone deserves a place on the trail, the summit, and in the sky. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

We start to introduce our q***r heroes outdoors before our new website dedicated to this project goes live. We begin with who is a dual Italian–American sailor and trailblazing q***r athlete. Her career spans two Olympic Games, offshore racing, and
groundbreaking leadership in the sport. She made
history as the first Italian to win The Ocean Race
and is now preparing for one of sailing’s toughest
challenges — the 2028 solo Vendée Globe. ⛵

Based in Utah with her wife, Olympic sailor Sally
Barkow, and their daughter Harriet, Francesca
brings together her love of the sea, the
mountains, and q***r community. Beyond sailing,
she’s a ski instructor, strength coach, and
volunteer EMT.

Through her “Believe, Belong, Achieve” campaign,
Francesca works to make sailing more inclusive,
visible, and sustainable. As a q***r athlete and
advocate, she uses her voice to open doors,
challenge sexism and q***rphobia, and show that
everyone deserves a place in the outdoors 🌈
