We are currently running the FotoQuest Austria campaign which provides users with an app to verify land cover through photos in the field.

Geo-Wiki provides anyone with the means to actively engage in the monitoring of the Earth's surface by evaluating satellite, drone, or ground-level imagery, while contributing to global environmental research. Since large differences occur between existing global land cover maps, current ecosystem and land-use science lacks crucial accurate data, which is for example needed to monitor deforestatio

n or determine the potential of additional agricultural land available to grow crops in Sub-Saharan African countries. GeoWiki is a volunteer community that helps generate and improve land data through different apps based on desk monitoring of land use change or field research. The input provided by users is recorded in a central database and is for the creation of improved global land cover map and datasets that are freely available to any user.

🌍 Citizen science is transforming how research is conducted, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and the public to tackle complex societal and environmental challenges. But to unlock its full potential, it needs stronger, more connected research infrastructure.

In this article, IIASA researchers Steffen Fritz, Linda See, Dilek Fraisl, and Katya Perez Guzman explain how the Horizon Europe-funded RIECS-Concept project is laying the foundations for a pan-European research infrastructure that will make citizen science more interoperable, accessible, and impactful. From integrating diverse data sources to fostering open governance and long-term sustainability, the initiative aims to support collaboration across science and society.
