🇲🇩🇪🇺At our event in Vienna, Victor Guzun — former Ambassador of Moldova to Estonia and digital policy expert at Institutul pentru Politici și Reforme Europene — delivered a powerful and timely message. Drawing on his deep diplomatic and governance experience, he outlined Moldova’s hard-won lessons in strengthening democratic resilience.

🔖Victor emphasized that defending democracy requires a whole-of-society effort, where institutions, citizens, media, the diaspora, and international partners act together. He underlined the growing strategic role of Moldovans abroad and the importance of fighting propaganda not through censorship, but through a steady, confident commitment to truth and open debate.

📱📲His core warning was unmistakable: hybrid interference is an existential threat, not an abstract one. With the largest war in Europe since WWII at our borders, Victor stressed that truth cannot be distorted and our reactions cannot be hesitant. 🇲🇩🇪🇺Democratic resilience, the kind that endures beyond individual election cycles, emerges where smart local policy meets strong strategic partnerships. This was the central theme of the FireSide Chat at the event in Vienna, featuring Pistrinciuc Vadim, PhD, Director of the Institute for Public Policy (IPIS), and Natalia Corobca-Ianusevici, MA, Project Manager at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Moldova. Both brought deep experience from government, civil society, and international development, offering a multidimensional perspective on what it takes to protect democracy in vulnerable contexts.

🎙️The discussion highlighted Moldova’s whole-of-society approach to countering a multimillion-euro interference campaign by Russia, which heavily targeted social policies and vulnerable communities. The speakers underscored a major lesson: traditional opinion polling can no longer be the sole compass for understanding public sentiment, especially in a disinformation-rich environment. Instead, they stressed the need for diversified insights drawn from qualitative research, investigative journalism, and direct engagement with communities.

🎙️At our event in Vienna, Mihail offered a clear and compelling analysis of how democracy is being defended in Gagauzia. His insights also helped clarify the origins of the estimated €350 million in interference—a figure drawn from multiple reports and sources, with much activity remaining untracked due to cash transactions.

🆕Mihail’s work exemplifies the power of independent media: mobilizing communities, providing factual counter-narratives, and sustaining democratic dialogue even in the toughest conditions.

✒️At our event in Vienna last week, the "Media and Civil Society on the frontlines" panel delivered a powerful and urgent message about how democracies are truly defended in the 21st century.

⛔️Măriuța Nistor, investigative journalist at Ziarul de Gardă, shared the breathtaking inside story of how her colleagues and herself stood on the frontlines against a multi-million dollar interference campaign in Moldova. They went undercover to infiltrate russian-backed troll farms, documented systematic vote-buying schemes, and mapped the flow of illicit funds through cryptocurrency channels.

🇲🇩Their work had a real-time impact, particularly as Mariuta pointed out, during the 2025 elections - disrupting interference campaigns as they happened and educating the public on the manipulation techniques being used by russia in Moldova.

What an inspiring day at Moldova Defends Democracy in Vienna, Austria!

🇲🇩🇪🇺🇦🇹The Vienna dialogue — focused on countering disinformation and hybrid warfare during Moldova’s parliamentary elections campaign, and on strengthening our country’s long-term resilience — was a resounding success. We were truly humbled by the caliber of conversation in the room, the high level of engagement with the topics discussed, and the genuine interest in understanding the diaspora’s role in defending democratic values, despite the distances that separate us.

💙It was an honor to have in our audience esteemed ambassadors from the US, EU, Georgia, Austria, and Estonia - Thomas M. Buchsbaum, Peter Michalko, and Victor Guzun - as well as senior government officials, leading think-tank analysts, academics, and members of our vibrant diaspora.

🇲🇩This overwhelming interest proves an important point: when we shift the narrative from “helping Moldova” to “learning from Moldova,” the strategic community in Austria and across Europe pays attention.
