Sometimes astrophotography still manages to surprise us.

Whenever we image in SHO (narrowband), we also capture a few short RGB exposures to give the stars their natural colors. In this case, we only took 24 × 60 seconds for each of the R, G, and B channels. Just 72 minutes of total RGB integration.

We didn't expect much from these "supporting" frames, but once we processed them, we were genuinely impressed. The amount of detail and color captured in just over an hour is remarkable.

This image is made exclusively from those 72 minutes of RGB data, and we thought it was simply too good not to share.

We want to share a close-up of M27 (the Dumbbell Nebula), this time processed in the Foraxx Palette instead of the classic Hubble Palette.

After experimenting with both, we find the Foraxx palette much more appealing. The colors are richer and more vibrant while still providing excellent separation between the different emission regions.

The long focal length also reveals an impressive amount of fine structural detail that is often lost in wider-field images. Looking closely, you can see countless delicate filaments, knots, and subtle variations throughout the nebula that really highlight its complex morphology.

Telescope: GSO 16" f/8 Ritchey-Chretien Truss Tube
Total integration: 14h 52m

The many clear nights over the past few weeks, combined with the usual madness of work life, somehow resulted in us collecting more than 18 hours of total integration time on M92. 😄

Of course, that much exposure time is not really necessary for a globular cluster, but once the data was there, we did not want to just leave it sitting unused on the hard drive.

The full-resolution version and more details can be found, as usual, on our AstroBin profile.

The short summer nights are a great opportunity to catch up on data collected over the past few months. 😊

This image features NGC 4151, also known as Sauron's Eye, along with the prominent spiral galaxy NGC 4145 and countless smaller galaxies scattered throughout the background.

With "only" ~23 hours of total integration time, the amount of faint background detail is already impressive. Every small smudge you see is another distant galaxy waiting to be explored.

NGC 4565 is one of the most beautiful edge-on galaxies there is. Above all, the striking dust lane and the dark structures in the disk make this object impressive every single time.

Since there are already countless truly beautiful images of NGC 4565, we deliberately chose a slightly different focus for this project: maximum depth. In total, this amounted to over 44 hours of exposure time, with the goal of making as many of the faint background galaxies visible as possible.

We are very satisfied with the result in this regard. Numerous small, sometimes extremely faint galaxies can be seen in the image, down to a magnitude of about ~20 mag. Especially in the full resolution on Astrobin, it’s worth taking some time to “wander” through the image. You’ll keep discovering new details.
