When we create swells of popular pressure, we can affect policy. Together, we in the outdoor community can raise our voices to protect the places we love from the effects of climate change. We are a community of athletes, scientists, creatives, and business leaders advancing non-partisan policies that protect our world today and for future generations.

The HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc in Chamonix is wrapping up this weekend. Have you wondered about the race’s latest progress in reducing its carbon footprint? Especially when it comes to transportation?

Spoiler alert: yes, it’s going down.

Another spoiler alert: no, it won’t be enough to reach the target the organizers set for themselves: a 20% reduction by 2030.

Congratulations to Alexander Ospelt on being elected as the new FIS President 🎉

As a new chapter begins for the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, we wanted to help the snow sports community better understand what this election could mean for climate and sustainability.

Ahead of the election, we asked all three candidates eight questions on key climate issues. In this post, we’ve gathered Alexander Ospelt’s full responses.

Over the last three years, POW has helped drive meaningful climate progress within FIS. With the election of the next FIS President taking place on Thursday 11 June, Protect Our Winters Europe and its national POW chapters reviewed the climate and sustainability commitments of all candidates running to lead the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS).

Climate change is an existential threat to the survival of the snow sports that we love. The future of winter sport will be reflected in the choices the FIS president makes now.

Winter is in our hands! Literally. With ’s latest campaign, Vi Är Vinden som Vänder (We Are the Changing Winds), you can receive a dialogue card with a guide for facilitating conversations about climate change. Some of the talking tips include:

+ Connect with others about climate change with a personal story or journey
+ Listen actively, there are no feelings that are right or wrong
+ Give space for reflection
+ Acknowledge that difficulty, sadness, and hopelessness are okay
+ Gently steer the conversation toward hope and action when it feels right

Is snowfall enough to make everything “perfect” in mountain regions? That’s the question we found ourselves asking after this winter.

Every year in the Alps, the question remains the same: will there be enough snow to bring in tourists? While artificial snow has become the norm in many resorts, climate change is making it harder to rely on the process long term.

But this winter showed us something important: snowy winters aren’t disappearing entirely. Instead, they’re becoming more unpredictable.
