Protect Our Winters Europe

Protect Our Winters Europe POW helps passionate outdoor people protect the places and lifestyles they love from climate change. YOUR PASSION FOR THE OUTDOORS CAN HELP SAVE IT!

When we create swells of popular pressure, we can affect policy. Together, we in the outdoor community can raise our voices to protect the places we love from the effects of climate change. We are a community of athletes, scientists, creatives, and business leaders advancing non-partisan policies that protect our world today and for future generations.

Congratulations to Alexander Ospelt on being elected as the new FIS President 🎉

As a new chapter begins for the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, we wanted to help the snow sports community better understand what this election could mean for climate and sustainability.

Ahead of the election, we asked all three candidates eight questions on key climate issues. In this post, we’ve gathered Alexander Ospelt’s full responses.

👉 Swipe through to discover his answers.

We look forward to working with President Ospelt and maintaining a constructive dialogue on climate and sustainability throughout his term, for the benefit of snow sports and everyone who depends on them.

Over the last three years, POW has helped drive meaningful climate progress within FIS. With the election of the next FIS President taking place on Thursday 11 June, Protect Our Winters Europe and its national POW chapters reviewed the climate and sustainability commitments of all candidates running to lead the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS).

Climate change is an existential threat to the survival of the snow sports that we love. The future of winter sport will be reflected in the choices the FIS president makes now.

👉 Swipe through to see their answers to our questions, and visit our blog for a deeper look at our assessment of each candidate’s proposals.

+ Connect with others about climate change with a personal story or journey
+ Listen actively, there are no feelings that are right or wrong
+ Give space for reflection
+ Acknowledge that difficulty, sadness, and hopelessness are okay
+ Gently steer the conversation toward hope and action when it feels right

And so much more!

Climate action only works when communities come together — and in 2025, we, across Protect Our Winters in Europe, saw the power of that collective momentum firsthand.

From advocacy in Brussels to athlete-led campaigns, climate education, industry collaboration and grassroots mobilisation across Europe, our 2025 Impact Report reflects what’s possible when the outdoor community turns passion into purpose.

A huge thank you to our chapters, athletes, partners, supporters, and everyone helping push for a more resilient future for the people and places we love.

Protect Our Winters in Europe: Seasonal Stoke Report Winter ❄️

The POW chapters across Europe have been hard at work engaging our communities and decision makers while campaigning for climate advocacy. From POW Netherlands transforming into POW Benelux, to POW Italy doing on-the-ground work to improve outcomes for communities impacted by the next Winter Olympics, to POW UK’s Clean Miles Campaign — we’ve all been up to a lot!

Is snowfall enough to make everything “perfect” in mountain regions? That’s the question we found ourselves asking after this winter.

Every year in the Alps, the question remains the same: will there be enough snow to bring in tourists? While artificial snow has become the norm in many resorts, climate change is making it harder to rely on the process long term.

But this winter showed us something important: snowy winters aren’t disappearing entirely. Instead, they’re becoming more unpredictable.

Today marks the start of the Winter Olympics! And while we’re excited, we’re also frightened.

Every site of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games has warmed since 1950. And mountains are warming 25-50% faster than the global average.

The future of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games relies on winter. Without swift climate action, the Winter Games — and the sports we love — are at risk of becoming relics of the past.

The Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games 2026 begin in Milano-Cortina, Italy in just a few short weeks (Olympics — February 6th to the 22nd and Paralympics — March 6th to the 15th).

Protect Our Winters in Europe — specifically and (France will be the host of the 2030 Winter Games) — have been working behind the scenes through community outreach, strategic meetings, and coalition partnerships to ensure the Olympics are as sustainable and locally-informed as possible.

We pulled together a timeline of POW in Europe’s work around the Winter Olympics in Italy 2026 and France 2030 to visualize our research and advocacy journey. Swipe to read the story — and stay tuned for more of our grassroots work!
