Today marks All Saints’ Day (Allerheiligen), a meaningful public holiday and one of Austria’s most cherished autumn traditions.

This day brings a distinct, quiet atmosphere across the country. It is a time dedicated to remembrance, reflection, and honoring loved ones who have passed away.

Graveside visits & candlelight: Families gather at local cemeteries (Friedhöfe) to clean, decorate, and adorn graves with fresh autumn flowers—especially vibrant chrysanthemums—and evergreen wreaths. In the afternoon, bells toll for prayer and grave blessings (Gräbersegnung). As dusk settles, thousands of red lantern lights (Grablichter) illuminate the graveyards, creating a deeply serene, warm sea of light.

Especially today, let’s remember those who are passing away—and keep in our thoughts anyone who is currently saying goodbye to a loved one. Wishing them peace, warmth, and strength.

What is the Austrian National Holiday?

Every year on 26 October, Austria celebrates its National Holiday (Nationalfeiertag). But what is the story behind it?

It does not commemorate a battle, a revolution, or the signing of the constitution. Instead, it marks a defining moment of peace and sovereignty. On 26 October 1955, the Austrian Parliament officially passed the constitutional law on permanent neutrality (immerwährende Neutralität), just one day after the last Allied occupation troops left the country following World War II.

Today, the day stands for freedom, peace, and national identity. Across Austria, public institutions and many federal museums open their doors, traditional hiking events take place in local communities, and people come together to enjoy time with family and friends.

How are you spending the holiday this year? Let us know in the comments.

It will be a relaxed, engaging evening to share thoughts on the novel with fellow readers.

Event details:

Book: Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke

Venue: Bar Flora (inside Parkhotel Graz)

Location note: Enter the hotel and turn left past the bar; the group meets in the quiet niche area.

As the autumn chill sets in, one of our absolute favourite Styrian traditions returns to the streets of Graz: Maroni & Sturm!

If you’re new to Graz, you might have noticed the cozy wooden huts appearing around town with smoke rising into the evening air. Here is everything you need to know about this classic local combo:

Maroni (Roasted Chestnuts):

Served piping hot in paper cones, these sweet, earthy chestnuts are the ultimate hand-warmers while strolling through the historic city centre.

Sturm (Young W**e):

A semi-fermented, bubbly early-season w**e that tastes sweet, fruity, and slightly effervescent. It’s available for just a few short weeks each autumn!

IWA Tip: You’ll find both white Sturm and the regional Styrian specialty, Schilchersturm (made from the local Blauer Wildbacher grape—vibrant pink and tart!).

Where to find them in Graz:

Look out for the little stands at Hauptplatz, along Herrengasse, at Jakominiplatz, and by the lively farmers' markets on Kaiser-Josef-Platz and Lendplatz.

Have you had your first bag of Maroni this season yet?

Are you a fan of white Sturm or Schilchersturm? Let us know in the comments below!
