Adaptive reuse is redefining how European cities meet climate targets transforming existing buildings and underused urban spaces into new ecological, social, and architectural value, while reducing demolition waste and embodied carbon.
This lecture explores both the opportunities and limitations of adaptive reuse, framed through the values of the New European Bauhaus: sustainability, inclusiveness, and beauty.

If you could bring one R&I question on sustainable energy into a room with 350+ energy experts, what would it be? 👇

‘We have reshaped the format of our ESEIA Working Group meetings to make them even more valuable for our members and experts.’ - ESEIA Director Brigitte Hasewend

Each session will now be structured in two parts:

1. A deep dive into a specific Research & Innovation topic, with space for real exchange and new ideas.
2. A quick overview of ongoing ESEIA initiatives, keeping everyone connected across active projects and proposals.

❓ What does it take to build a workforce ready for the green transition in Europe?

That was the central question at the 17th ESEIA Lecture Series | Jobs for the Green Transformation, co-organised by ESEIA - European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance, Technische Universität Graz, and the INITIATE HORIZON EUROPE PROJECT, bringing together 37 participants from 13 countries.

Invited lecturer Davide Villani, JRC / Centre for Advanced Studies, European Commission, explored how the Green Industrial Deal is reshaping labour markets, driving demand for new green job profiles and skills, and raising key questions around equity, curriculum adaptation, and the role of public policy in ensuring an inclusive transition. 🎥 Watch the recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8dtf_tETWE

Fabio Maria Montagnino, The Cyprus Institute, contributed with the innovation ecosystem perspective, highlighting how stronger connections between researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry can turn green ambitions into real employment opportunities. 🎥 Watch the response: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkJSYpa9kCg&time_continue=1&source_ve_path=NzY3NTg&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Feseia.eu%2F

♻️ The circular economy sits at the core of Europe’s sustainability transition, but what drives companies to act?

In the most recent edition of the series, we feature research from Rupert J. Baumgartner, Professor for Sustainability Management, Department of Environmental Systems Sciences (ESS), Technische Universität Graz, AT, offering a clear framework:

“Basically, we see three different motivations for companies to do something for sustainability and for circularity. One is legal pressure, European initiatives like the Green Deal or the circular economy package are forcing companies to a minimum level. Then we see opportunistic companies: if you do it in the right way you can have better value creation, you can be better off economically. And there are companies, the minority, with intrinsic motivation: they want to contribute to a better world, they want to solve the sustainability crisis we observe currently.” — Rupert J. Baumgartner

💡 The key takeaway: circularity is not automatic. Understanding these drivers is essential to shaping effective policies, business models, and partnerships.

This conversation is featured in the latest series, our editorial space for the perspectives, research and projects shaping the energy transition.
