Spiridon II - Organisator vor Gericht

Die Gerichtsverhandlung im Fall der „Spiridon II“ ist ohne Ergebnis vertagt worden. Der österreichische Organisator des Transports gibt an, ihn treffe keine Schuld, dass das Schiff wochenlang vor der türkischen Küste festsaß. Obwohl nachweislich dutzende Tiere an Bord gestorben sind und hunderte trächtige Kalbinnen ihre Kälber in knietiefem Dreck gebären mussten, gibt er an, den Tieren sei es bis zur Ankunft in der Türkei gut gegangen. Dass der Fall überhaupt vor Gericht kam, hat damit zu tun, dass die Importeure ihr Geld zurückfordern. Das Tierleid, das dieser Transport ausgelöst hat, ist dabei nicht mehr als eine Randnotiz. Der Fall zeigt einmal mehr: Tiertransporte per Schiff sind kaum kontrollierbar, rechtlich gibt es im Sinne des Tierschutzes keine Handhabe und die verschiedenen Beteiligten schieben sich bei Problemen gegenseitig die Schuld zu. Es braucht endlich verbindliche Tierschutzstandards und ein Verbot von Lebendtiertrabsporten per Schiff!

The court hearing in the case of the Spiridon II has been adjourned without a verdict. The Austrian organizer of the transport claims he bears no responsibility for the fact that the ship was stranded off the Turkish coast for weeks. Despite documented evidence that dozens of animals died on board and hundreds of pregnant heifers were forced to give birth in knee-deep filth, he maintains that the animals were in good condition until their arrival in Turkey.
The case reached court only because the importers are seeking a refund. The suffering endured by the animals during the voyage has become little more than a footnote in the proceedings.
Once again, this case highlights a fundamental problem: live animal transports by sea are extremely difficult to monitor, animal welfare laws provide little effective means of enforcement, and when problems arise, the various parties involved tend to shift responsibility onto one another.
What is urgently needed are binding animal welfare standards and a ban on the transport of live animals by ship.
