Part I: SPBA Youth Night
In 2 Timothy 1:6–7, Paul writes, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God… For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” A single flame may seem small, but when many flames come together, the light grows stronger and brighter. Each young person carries an individual light placed within them by God. At times that flame may feel as though it is fading because of fear, doubt, or pressure. Yet, if Jesus is the source, the fire never truly goes out. Even when it flickers, it remains lit, ready to be stirred again. When our individual lights unite, they create a powerful glow that pushes back darkness and reflects Christ to the world.
As they enter into a new year, Youth Director of SPBA, Ms. Precious Tavete, gathered the youth around a flame, echoing the way communities once assembled around fire in ancient times. In history, a flame symbolized guidance, warmth, protection, and the presence of hope in the night. It represented life and direction. As the young people stood together, they were reminded that their faith is not meant to remain hidden but to burn with purpose. The verse from 2 Timothy connected deeply to that moment: God has given them courage, love, and discipline not fear. Just as a flame must be tended, their spiritual gifts must be nurtured through prayer, obedience, and fellowship.
Each youth member received a piece of paper and wrote down a personal petition before placing it into the fire. Watching the paper surrender to the flame carried spiritual meaning. It symbolized releasing burdens, fears, and requests into God’s hands. Fire in Scripture often represents purification and refinement. By offering their written prayers to the flame, they demonstrated trust that God hears, sees, and responds. It was not about the paper itself, but about the surrender of the heart. In that act, they were reminded that God strengthens what we entrust to Him.
Being young today comes with many pressures expectations at school, social influences, family responsibilities, and the quiet battles no one else sees. Sometimes those pressures can cause a young person’s flame to feel weak. Yet, the lesson remains clear: when Christ is the source, the light endures. When believers stand together, their combined faith becomes a beacon in uncertain times. We are grateful to Ms. Precious Tavete for her willing heart to serve the Lord and for being a reflection of His love to our youth. May we all remember to fan into flame the gift God has given us and allow our light to shine boldly for Him.
What an amazing fellowship, worship, games and s'mores! Thank You Lord for these moments and opportunities for our young to get together.
