🐮 When you think of Switzerland, what comes to mind? The mountains? The watches? And… the cows? 🇨🇭
In Switzerland, cows are everywhere. They can be found not only in pastures, but also in crafts, advertising and tourism. At the heart of everyday life in the country and an ambassador beyond its borders, the cow is a Swiss icon. But why does this animal hold such a special place in the country’s identity?
🕰️ Unlike other countries, Switzerland is not associated with a single animal, but the cow has been a reference point since the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. In 1386, during the Battle of Sempach, it symbolised the country’s resistance. Over the centuries, the cow has remained closely tied to Switzerland’s history and image.
🥛 The cow is a symbol of economic prosperity thanks to the milk trade. From the 18th century onwards, Swiss farmers exported dairy products, allowing many mountain families to secure their livelihoods and prosper. Today, the cow remains central to Swiss agriculture, and its milk is at the heart of emblematic products such as cheese and chocolate.
⛰️ The cow maintains a strong emotional bond with the Swiss population. Its friendly image evokes childhood memories, the mountains, chalets, the seasonal move to alpine pastures, as well as events such as the “combats de reines”. The roughly 700,000 cows recorded in Switzerland embody a deep attachment to the country’s roots, landscapes and heritage.
