Haaland, you’re such a likeable icon.

We know you care about what fuels your body. But did you know that most Norwegian salmon comes from open net farms?

That means it’s not wild, and its production system has been linked to the use of antibiotics and pesticides, poor animal welfare, and multiple impacts on marine ecosystems.

The good news? There are many protein alternatives with a lower impact on oceans and the ecosystem.

We wanted to share this with you so we can all make more conscious choices.

June 8th · World Oceans Day 🌊❤️

Scientists estimate there are between 700,000 and 1 million species living in our oceans: from whales and sea turtles to polar bears, wild salmon, and countless creatures we may never see, the ocean is home to an extraordinary diversity of life.

Today, we celebrate that richness and the ecosystems that make it possible.

Every species has a place in the ocean. Open-net salmon farms don’t.

Together, we can protect wild oceans and the life they sustain.

Today we celebrate wild salmon — an extraordinary species whose journey sustains rivers, oceans, forests, wildlife, and communities.
They deserve healthy rivers, healthy oceans, and a future where they can return for generations to come.

Thanks for being part of this work and for standing with us to protect and restore wild salmon populations.

🐟FAO’s global fisheries and aquaculture database reveals two opposing trends shaping the future of salmon worldwide:

Since 1980, wild salmon catches have fallen by 94% — from 12.7 million tonnes to just 0.8 million tonnes in 2024.
Over the same period, salmon aquaculture has grown from a relatively small industry into one of the world’s largest seafood sectors, reaching 2.7 million tonnes in 2024.
These numbers are deeply connected.

As industrial salmon farming grows, it puts increasing pressure on wild salmon populations through sea lice outbreaks, disease transmission, chemical pollution, escaped farmed salmon competing and interbreeding with wild fish, and the degradation of coastal ecosystems surrounding farming sites.

Wild salmon face many pressures — including climate change, habitat loss, and barriers to migration. Industrial salmon farming is one of them.

💥Meet the wild sockeye salmon:
One of the smaller Pacific salmon species, but with one of the most extraordinary life cycles.

📍Found across the North Pacific, along the west coast of North America, as well as Russia and Japan
🐟Carnivorous: feeding on zooplankton, small crustaceans, and fish
🦭 Predators: marine mammals and bears
💞Spawning season: August to October
🔍Fun fact: When sockeye salmon return to freshwater to spawn, their bodies transform completely, turning bright red with green heads. Males even develop a hu**ed back and hooked jaws.

From ocean to river and back again, a life shaped by movement, instinct, and place.

But, there is a big threat: salmon aquaculture is a recognised pressure on wild salmon, contributing to disease transmission, parasite spread, and ecosystem impacts.

This is not the salmon most commonly sold in supermarkets. What many consumers know as “salmon” is usually farmed Atlantic salmon, raised through industrial production. Wild sockeye is a different species entirely, shaped by rivers, currents, and migration, not cages.

Understanding that difference means recognising, respecting, and protecting wild species, and the ecosystems they depend on.
