Mark Carney announced on Friday that he was walking away from negotiations with the United States after American negotiators presented what he described as an unfair last-minute changes to the deal.

He mentioned a few important issues he disagreed with the Americans on like steel and autos, but he was noticeably vague when talking about the actual last-minute changes, which he said were attacks on our "culture."

Now The Globe and Mail is reporting that those attacks on our "culture" were in fact a demand to weaken Liberal digital censorship laws,

The main point of contention was The Online Streaming Act, a law passed by the Trudeau Liberals in 2023 which allows the government to force streaming services like Netflix to show you government-approved “Canadian content.”

The goal is to make it harder to find shows you actually want to watch so you watch stuff like the CBC instead.

The law has been so controversial and so poorly thought-out that the Carney Liberals eventually decided to simply not implement a part of the law which taxed foreign streaming services, which would have raised prices for Canadians. The Liberals announced last month that the "contribution requirement" part of the law was effectively dead.

The Americans were reportedly demanding an exemption from the censorship under this law. Yet despite his own lack of faith in The Online Streaming Act, Carney used this as a pretext to walk away from negotiations.
