🧠 Neuropsychiatric disorders: brief information about some of them.
Swipe through to explore their pathology, core symptoms, and DSM-5 classifications 🧠💙
💡Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurological and developmental condition defined by DSM-5 through persistent deficits in social communication and the presence of restricted, repetitive behavioral patterns. While its primary etiology is not fully understood, research suggests that multifaceted genetic and environmental factors influence neurodevelopment, with clinical symptoms typically manifesting within the first 24
months of life.
📕DSM-5: Autism Spectrum Disorder (Neurodevelopmental Disorders).
💡Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by progressive cognitive dysfunction and dementia. Pathologically, it is defined by the extracellular accumulation of amyloid plaques (primarily Aβ42 peptides) and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, specifically affecting structures like the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. These changes lead to the degeneration of cholinergic neurons, resulting in significant synaptic dysfunction and loss of cognitive integrative functions such as reasoning and memory.
📕DSM-5: Major/Mild NCD Due to Alzheimer's disease
💡Parkinson’s disease primarily manifests through motor disturbances, including bradykinesia (slowness of movement), resting tremors, and difficulty initiating or concluding movements. This condition is caused by the selective death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. A hallmark histological feature is the presence of Lewy bodies within the cytoplasm, which are pathological accumulations of the alpha-synuclein protein.
📕DSM-5: Major/Mild NCD Due to Parkinson's disease
💡Huntington’s disease is a hereditary disorder caused by a "dynamic mutation" involving excessive CAG triplet repeats in the huntingtin gene, leading to a mutated protein with high glutamine residues. This mutation disrupts microtubule stability and axonal transport. The disease causes selective degeneration of GABAergic neurons in the basal ganglia, particularly the caudate nucleus, which clinically results in chorea (involuntary, jerky movements) and hyperkinesis.
📕DSM-5: Major/Mild NCD Due to Huntington's disease
Understanding these conditions not only deepens clinical insight but also fosters empathy, awareness, and more compassionate care for those affected. 🧠💙
