Before and after your architectural walking tour of Gyumri, definitely take the time for a slow crawl through the historic center’s narrow cobblestoned streets when in town, and don’t be surprised if a local person invites you into their home or shop for a cup of coffee. Hospitality, even toward complete strangers, is in Armenians’ DNA. Definitely say yes to the offer – you never know what local delights await within the black walls and courtyards of Gyumri.

The Kumayri historic district, where our walking tour takes place, is one of the few places in Armenia and the region where authentic urban Armenian architecture still exists. There are over 1,500 historic buildings in the central and western parts of Gyumri today that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. While exploring, we’ll pass many intricately decorated antique doors, leftovers from the city’s glorious Art Nouveau period, like this one. “When the Soviet Union collapsed and the country was in crisis, we thought about what cultural heritage and values were still around in Armenia, specifically in our city of Gyumri, that we could give new life to. We understood that the old city could be a pillar around which we could begin our work and come out of the crisis,” says local architect and your guide on our architectural walking tours, Ashot.

A phaeton is a horse drawn open carriage once popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They have all but disappeared in Armenia, yet remain a symbol of the city of Gyumri thanks to their immortalization in Soviet Armenian films and folk songs romanticizing their role in everyday life. You can spot some of the few remaining faytonchis (professional phaeton drivers) in Gyumri’s historic district, where our walking tour takes place, and even take a ride in one of them, imagining yourself a turn-of-the-19th century traveler.

History and tradition can be found around every corner of Gyumri, in every stone, in every crack. This pulpulak, or local drinking fountain, is in the shape of a mushurba, or a klklan, a specific type of cup made only here, originally from historic Western Armenia, that makes a gurgling sound water is poured out of it. This is just one of many cultural curiosities you’ll learn about on our walking tour: https://shorturl.at/bgzX4
