For the last six years, we have been celebrating in our tree nurseries, planting seeds and transplanting seedlings together with local women and men from Lurë and Voskopojë. There is no better way to celebrate our planet than by nurturing it!

Last week, our team split between the tree nurseries in Lurë and Voskopojë, marking the start of the 2026 spring season. The work focused on transplanting seedlings into larger recyclable BCC trays, planting seeds and another season of work with local communities.

So far, we have planted six species: Black pine, Silver fir, Oak, European larch, Scots pine, European spruce, while the seventh, the European beech, is currently completing its stratification and will be planted in the next weeks, bringing the spring season activities to an end.

These collective efforts will result in the production of up to 60,000 seedlings, ready for planting during the autumn reforestation season 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

Join us in nurturing the next forests. Follow our journey, support our work, or get involved in the seasons ahead.

Soil & microclimate monitoring for Lurë & Voskopojë

Understanding weather, soil moisture levels and microclimate in areas we work is crucial for planning planting season for trees, seeds and seed-balls as well as interpretation of the success rates of our reforestation projects.

We are using microclimate sensors from the Czech TOMST s.r.o. in both Lurë and Voskopojë, in areas where we have been planting trees in 2024 and 2025.

These sensors are fully waterproof and designed to last 10 years in the field, if not damaged or stolen. They are measuring the following parameters:
* soil moisture
* temperature of the soil
* temperature at the surface level
* air temperature at 20cm above the surface

We are already monitoring weather conditions in Lurë and Voskopojë with the help of our monitoring systems. This allows us to monitor key weather parameters such as temperature, humidity and precipitation which are crucial for understanding the conditions in which our trees are growing and planning our planting activities

By combining data from the microclimate sensors, weather conditions, and survival rate, we can identify patterns and correlations that help us understand and interpret the survival rate for a particular year.

Quality control: X-ray pictures of our seeds

Few weeks ago delivered samples of the Black pine, Macedonian pine and European silver fir to the Seed processing plan in Týniště nad Orlicí, part of Lesy České republiky (Forests of the Czech Republic, State Enterprise).

These are X-ray pictures of Macedonian pine (Pinus peace), Black pine (Pinus nigra) and Silver fir (Abies alba) seeds which were collected in the Lurë national park, Dibër, in Nov ’25 nad Feb ’26.

X-ray test is one of the quality tests which Seed processing plan in Týniště nad Orlicí performs when evaluating the seed material quality.

We are grateful for the expertise and help which the Seed processing plant in Týniště nad Orlicí gives us continuously regarding the seed processing, preparation and quality control.

Their help is allowing us to align our seed collection and processing protocols with EU standards.

The seeds from these samples will be planted in next weeks in our Fushë-Lurë and Voskopojë tree nurseries.

The best way to celebrate the International Day of Forests is to make a real effort to support and care for our forests sustainably, create local jobs and bring people together!

Today, we want to celebrate all the people who join us on this wonderful adventure of reforesting high-altitude forests in Albania. We appreciate the women who take care of the seeds and saplings in the tree nurseries, the local communities that not only plant trees but also have become an essential part of the work by showing up every season, and the kids who give us a lot of energy every time they visit the nurseries and planting areas for educational workshops. And last but not least, the native trees we grow from seed give us hope for healthier forests in the future 🌱

On this day, we couldn’t be anywhere else than in one of our tree nurseries, taking care of our trees. Together with a few people from Voskopojë, we began transplanting the trees, preparing them for the next autumn tree-planting season.

WOMEN’S DAY IN THE FOREST

We spent March 8 in Pregj-Lurë, replanting trees!

Last year, in collaboration with Agjencia Kombëtare e Pyjeve and Municipality of Peshkopi, we planted 1,700 Black pine saplings in the municipal deforested area in Pregj-Lurë. Because the rocky terrain and sun exposure caused a very low survival rate, we returned this weekend to replant 1,300 trees and give the forest another chance.

The terrain conditions (very rocky) and the orientation (south-east) contributed to a very low survival rate for the trees planted in 2024, so this year we followed up by replacing almost the whole area.

In addition to replanting in Pregj-Lurë, we also increased the number of trees replanted this year from 5,115 to 6,360. This brings the total number of trees we have planted to 44,351 trees! 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲

Five local women joined our coordinator, Imer, for two days of hard work in the mountains. Their strength and willingness to help remind us of the importance of rural women in caring for their land, families, and communities.

Next, we’ll get our nurseries and seeds ready for the new planting season.

STARTING THE 2026 SPRING SEASON

As you know by now, our work doesn’t really have a clear beginning or end. It’s more of an ongoing cycle that began years ago. Still, if we had to choose a starting point, it would be with the seeds.

Pictures 2-3&16:
Between September and February, Imerr Mena our local coordinator in Lurë, and five workers collected cones of Black pine, Silver fir, Macedonian pine, Bosnian pine. Sadly, this year wasn’t great for Bosnian pine because most of the pinecones were empty. We were able to get some Quercus robur seeds for free from the Pukë region, and we also bought Silver fir seeds from a young seed collector in Lubonjë, to test them in our tree nurseries.

Picture 5-6:
While the last Black pine and Bosnian pine cones open in the spring sun in Lurë, we brought the Silver fir and Macedonian pine to Tirana to be cleaned, sorted, and started stratification, since these species need more time than the others.

Picture 7-9:
The cleaning machine we built last year with Albi, has become a great tool for quickly and efficiently cleaning and sorting our seeds. Now that we have protocols for each species, the cleaning process is much more enjoyable.

Pictures 10-11:
Before and after cleaning the Macedonian pine and Silver fir in a very short time.

Pictures 12-15:
After cleaning the seeds, we test samples from each species and look at things like weight, percentage of good and bad seeds, and visual traits. It’s a slow process, but it gives us valuable data that helps our yearly nursery production.

Pictures 17-19
We’ve started stratifying the Macedonian pine and Silver fir seeds. Meanwhile, we’ve collected Black pine and Bosnian pine cones, which are now opening in the sun in Lurë.

Spring has just started, and there’s a lot to do. So, wish us luck! 🌲

2025 ANNUAL REPORT

We published our 2025 Annual report where you can read all the finance details. You can find it in the Annual Reports section on the Finance page or in Update 32 on the News page.

As it has become tradition, every year we team up with young artists for our Annual Report covers. Thank you to Jolin Matraku and Kolekivi Zanat for the beautiful illustration on our 2025 report! This is our fourth artist collaboration, and we love seeing each artist’s unique take on our reforestation work.

We also want to give a big thank you to the other amazing artists from past years:
2024 Annual Report cover, by Joreld Dhamo from Parallel Studio
2023 Annual Report cover, by Natasha, Elsa, Fatma Paja from Trivet Art
2022 Annual Report cover, by Tiziana Lohja

While the report covers everything in detail, here are a few highlights:
-
This year, we planted and replanted 8,843 more trees in Lurë and Voskopojë. That brings our total to 43,106 trees and 43.24 hectares of restored land.
-
Every tree we planted in 2025 was grown from seed in our Lurë tree nursery!
-
We also built a second tree nursery in Voskopojë, so we can now grow up to 30,000 saplings each year. We raise six native species of coniferous and deciduous trees, and our nursery projects help provide income for women.
-
We are proud to offer regular seasonal jobs in both Lurë and Voskopojë for 64 people, including women, youth, and men who collect seeds, work in our nurseries, and plant trees. Our educational workshops with schools from Dibër and Korcë also grew, reaching 121 students.
-
None of this would be possible without the support of our partners: risr/, Green-AL project funded by Sida - Styrelsen för Internationellt Utvecklingssamarbete, Agjencia Kombëtare e Pyjeve, Fakulteti i Shkencave Pyjore, BestSeller Albania, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Universiteti Bujqësor i Tiranës, Botanea Forest Nursery, CropTech Albania, Innospace Tirana and our 11 individual donors!

We could not have spent our Saturday morning in a better way than this, meeting curious kids and their parents to talk about seeds, trees, and forests 🌱
We loved sharing our story and a few trees too, and can’t wait to see them planted on balconies or in gardens.

Shkolla Nënë Tereza Rrëshen workshop & last day of reforestation for 2025
-
Last week, we were back in Lurë for our favourite activities, hosting a school workshop and finishing off this year’s tree planting in Lurë.
-
If you remember, this year we had an adventurous planting season in Lurë, between rainy days and working days. Due to the weather conditions, we needed to postpone the “Nënë Tereza” school from Rrëshen, as well as planting the last trees in the 2025 area.
-
Ten students and two teachers attended a workshop on Wednesday, the 17th. The weather was great, a typical winter sunny day, but the kids brought an extra dose of enthusiasm to lighten up the whole area.
-
We started the day at the planting area, where the students not only carefully planted a few Pinus nigra trees but also had the chance to meet our workers, who were finishing off the tree planting for Reforestation 2025. As usual, the school kids always end up with a bit of competition over who plants more… this time the competition was between students vs. kids 😊
-
We then moved to the tree nursery, with everyone’s favourite transport vehicle (our beloved Kësulkuqe) and showed them the different tree species and seeds we have, as well as the monitoring system.
-
The workshop day ended with an improvised picnic at the Tree nursery, filled with laughter and food sharing.
We want to thank the teachers for bringing their students to Lurë, and most of all, we want to thank the kids who brought in a lot of smiles and joy.
-
Then we went back to the planting area to check up on the planting work, pay the workers for the day and drive them back to the village.
-
The next day, before leaving Lurë, we spent a few hours at the tree nursery, preparing it for the winter months ahead. There were a lot of moving trays around, organising and making minor fixes at the greenhouse.
-
Now we enjoy the Holiday season and will be back in January with new energy and ideas for a 2026 tree-planting adventure.
