Seeds - Seeds - Seeds - Seeds

Before the planting season begins, there’s work to do behind the scenes.
—
We started the stratification of some of the seeds collected this year from the high-altitude areas of Lurë, Voskopojë, and Valamarë, and preparing them for the next stage.
—
First, we created the right conditions for the cones to open naturally. Then, we wait patiently for the seeds to come out.
—
Over the years, through a lot of lesson-learned, we have developed our own seed protocol, which we now follow to give each batch of seeds the best possible start.
—
This time we got our team together working on different tasks. From cleaning to seed sorting and quality checking to starting cold/warm stratification.
—
josie , did a thorough manual cleaning of the Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii) and
Macedonian pine (Pinus peuce).
—
Natasha, patiently did a seed sorting and quality checking of Wild cherry (Prunus avium) and Whitebeam (Sorbus umbellata).
—
FAR&FURTHER , started the warm stratification of Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) and Ostrya carpinifolia (Hop-Hornbeam).
—
This is our first year trying warm stratification with some new species, and we’re curious to see how it goes.
Another little experiment, another chance to learn something new. 🌱🌱🌱🌱

OPEN CALL - YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER

Are you a young photographer who loves forests, nature and being outdoors?
—
We are looking for you to join during this year’s tree planting season and help us capture what happens in the field.
—
You’ll spend few days (end of October, beginning of November) with our team during tree planting and forest restoration, photographing the local community, the work, the landscapes and all the small moments in between.
—
You don’t have to be a professional photographer. We’re looking for someone who enjoys photography, has a good eye and is interested in nature and environmental work.
—
During field trips, Trees for Albania will cover your transport, accommodation and food.

A new planting season is about to begin in Lurë and Voskopojë
—
As we plan this year’s planting season in both regions, we managed to attend two important meetings yesterday in Lurë.
—
We welcomed the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Albania, Pavel Vacek, in Lurë. The visit was an opportunity to show him our sustainable reforestation work, and to meet with the Deputy of Dibër, Alma Selami, Director of AdZM Dibër, Leonard Topuzi, and Administrator of Lurë, Urim Mena to discuss possible cooperation.

We talked about the continuation of sustainable ecosystem restoration in Lurë, as well as an idea for developing a network of hiking, running and skiing trails in the area. Trees for Albania will support this initiative, while the trail project itself will be developed and implemented by Všechny tváře Albánie a Czech NGO.
—
We also participated in the community hearing on the “Integrated Managing Plan of Lurë-Dejës Mt. National Park”, as one of the active local actors working in the area since 2020. Having an updated Managing Plan is essential not only for our reforestation works, but also for the long-term protection and conservation of the National Park and its ecosystems.
—
There is a lot happening in Lurë, and we are happy to be part of these conversations and, whenever possible, help connect people and ideas that can benefit both the community and the area.
—
Now, it’s time to get back to planning, monitoring and to our trees. 🌱

Lurë needs urgent support!
-
The fires in Lurë have been burning for days and, unfortunately, are now also approaching the villages. The situation remains extremely difficult, and every form of help is needed.
-
For anyone who wants to help: please do not go to the affected areas without coordination. First contact the firefighters, military forces or ADZM Dibër to ask where and how to help.
-
The situation is dangerous and can change very quickly. The best way to help is to support the professionals who are already on the ground, rather than acting impulsively and putting yourself or others at risk.

Let’s support those fighting the fires and help responsibly!

Lurë: Soil cover as drought mitigation

Raising temperatures and low rainfall negatively impacts any restoration project. Again, as last year we are experiencing high temperatures as very low rainfall during summer months.
—
This research project monitors differences in soil moisture and temperature between saplings where we used soil cover and without soil cover. It aims to provide evidence to apply soil cover using waste organic material to improve the survival rate of the trees.
—
We set up a pilot area in our 2024 Lurë planting area which has been affected by the drought and we had to replace many of our trees in 2025.
The area we chose is very difficult to restore as it does not have existing vegetation and is exposed to the sun most of the day.
—
We use 2 TMS-4 dataloggers, one inserted at the tree without soil cover and another with soil cover. Dataloggers measure soil moisture and soil temperature as well as temperature at ground and at 20 cm.
—
Cover material we use is a waste material from our seed collection activities. This material would be either used as a fire wood or discarded, we are giving it new life.
—
In September during our final monitoring for 2026 we will also know how the higher soil moisture affects the survival rate.
