Welcome to our Business Club, Department of the Environment of Monaco!

We are pleased to announce that the Departement of the Environment of Monaco is joining the Business Club, the first public institution to take part in our discussion on plastic-related issues.

The Department plays a key role in the Principality's environmental policy has it helps shape and implement the Monegasque Government's sustainable development policy, monitors pollution sources, and represents Monaco in international negotiations, including the global treaty against plastic pollution.

We are proud to have the Department of Environment of Monaco among our members and look forward to future exchanges. ✨

🇹🇷 In Gökçeada, Türkiye, local stakeholders are working together to reduce single-use plastics across the island.

Since the start of the project, the Gökçeada municipality (Gökçeada Belediyesi) has been gathering information on the use of single-use plastics. A survey of 180 residents, businesses, fishers, parents, children and tourists helped identify the main plastic products used on the island, available reusable alternatives and priorities for action.

The project is now focusing on the development of a local Action Plan. A three-day event brought together 90 students and teachers and 50 representatives from public institutions, restaurants, cafés and NGOs to discuss priorities and possible solutions.

water bottles and expanded polystyrene takeaway containers were identified as key priorities, while measures such as offering hotel products, straws and stirrers only on request were considered easier to implement in the short term. Reuse systems and cooperation between local stakeholders are also being explored. 💧♻️

The project has now reached an important milestone, with 10 drinking water fountains successfully installed at schools and public institutions across the island and 1,200 reusable insulated water bottles distributed to students and municipal staff.

Because lasting change starts with understanding local challenges and working together to develop solutions adapted to local needs. 🌊

Are you working in the sports sector? Discover the Guide to Eliminating Single-Use Plastics in Sports developed by No plastic in my sea 🏃

Like any event, sporting events can generate plastic waste, but they can also help drive change by influencing social norms and practices.

As we are working to reduce plastic use in the sports sector, we decided to translate this useful guide into English to make these good practices more accessible to our network.

This topic will also be the focus of our next BeMed Community rendez-vous. Today, Camille Wolff from No plastic in my sea will present the guide and share the organisation’s experience with our community.

Many thanks to all our partners who took part in the Forum Mondial de la Mer - Bizerte and came together around a shared goal: fighting plastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.

Although BeMed could not join them for this event, we are delighted to see so many of our partners gathered and highlighting our joint efforts, particularly around sustainable tourism and reducing plastic pollution in the tourism sector, but not only.

It is always encouraging to see our partners coming together, sharing their experiences and continuing to build on the actions we have developed together.
