👀 We need a bigger picture. This is an urgent emergency.

Inspired by the IMAX trend around Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, we wanted to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

Because the plastic crisis cannot be understood from a single angle. Plastic is everywhere, across ecosystems, communities and sectors, and so are its impacts.

The way we look at the problem matters. We need to move beyond tackling plastic one piece of waste at a time, and address the systems, behaviours and consumption patterns behind it.

The bigger picture is where change begins.

The BeMed+ project continues to strengthen its local actions.

📍 Following Albania last week, today the spotlight is on Tunisia!

Led on the ground by Notre Grand Bleu and UICN - Centre de coopération pour la Méditerranée, BeMed+ is bringing together public authorities, schools, local communities, restaurants, hotels and sports organisations in Monastir to reduce plastic pollution and promote more sustainable practices.

In schools, environmental education is being strengthened through a partnership with the Ministry of Education, educational resources and training for teachers and students.

♻️ In Stah Jaber neighborhood, a pilot waste-sorting scheme is being developed with local communities. 106 households were surveyed, with 95.3% expressing their support for the project.

Restaurants and hotels are also being supported through environmental audits and action plans based on the BeMed methodology, while sports facilities are exploring solutions to reduce plastic water bottles and improve waste collection.
Together with local partners, BeMed+ is turning local commitment into concrete and replicable action.

Dans le cadre de la FIBA 3x3 Nations League 2026 – Africa North, organisée à Monastir par la Fédération Tunisienne de Basketball, Notre Grand Bleu est allé à la rencontre des joueurs pour partager des messages essentiels sur la réduction des déchets, la lutte contre le plastique à usage unique et la protection de notre environnement marin. ♻️🌊

Cette action s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet BeMed+ – Mesure 3 : Secteur Sport. 🏀🌱

A collective initiative to reduce plastics in hotels 🏨

Supported by BeMed through the 2024 Call for Projects dedicated to Mediterranean islands, the "Collège d’Hôtels" in Djerba was developed by ACD and ConsultantSeas, following the model of the "Collèges d’Hôtels" established in Hammamet and Monastir through BeMed’s pilot project at La Badira.

Since its launch in 2025, the project has led to the creation of Djerba’s Collège d’Hôtels, following a preparatory phase involving key stakeholders from the tourism and environmental sectors, and a launch event held in July 2025.

In November 2025, the first General Assembly brought together representatives from the 16 member hotels, introducing the Towards a Zero Single-Use Plastic Hotel methodology, identifying the network’s priorities and establishing a technical working group to facilitate exchanges between establishments.

💼In the first half of 2026, the 16 hotels joined the BeMed hotel training programme, delivered by ConsultantSeas, covering the first four key steps: Diagnosis, Prioritisation, Solutions Benchmarking and Solutions Sharing.

Alongside the group training, Active Citizens for Development association provided tailored support to the hotels throughout each step of the process, including on-site 360° plastic diagnostics, support with prioritising single-use plastics, staff engagement through 11 collaborative workshops, and assistance in identifying and benchmarking solutions available in Djerba.

👉In the coming months, the 16 hotels will continue the online training and pursue their efforts to reduce single-use plastics, with continued support from ACD and ConsultantSeas.

Raising awareness through a card game 🃏

DelTa - Delfini e Tartarughe in Alto Adriatico was selected by BeMed call for micro-initiatives in 2024, with the ambition to create a card board dedicated to raising awareness about plastic pollution.

For a year and a half, they developed this game. Designed for children aged 8 and over, the game is intended for schools, environmental organisations and sailing clubs.

Based in Italy, the association also translated the game into English and is open to collaborating on translations into other languages in order to use this game in other countries.

Key achievements:
• 420 printed copies produced and distributed.
• Successfully showcased at schools, science museums, and scientific events.
• Strongly appreciated by teachers for its educational value and interactive approach.

The BeMed+ project continues to strengthen its local actions.

📍 Today, the spotlight is on Albania!

Partnership agreements with the municipalities of Elbasan and Librazhd are paving the way for local plastic waste management plans and concrete actions to reduce single-use plastics.

A training session was held in Librazhd for 60 teachers, focusing on integrating environmental education into school programs and promoting the reduction of single-use plastic waste.

Across the municipalities, HoReCa, and sports sectors, BeMed+ is supporting local stakeholders in adopting practical solutions to reduce single-use plastics and promote more sustainable practices.

With the strong commitment of local authorities and continued collaboration with UICN - Centre de coopération pour la Méditerranée and INCA Albania, the project is creating momentum for long-term, replicable impact. ♻️

💭 Testimonial from BeMed’s hotel training course

In 2025, BeMed launched the first edition of its online training course to help hotels reduce their plastic footprint and train NGOs on a methodology they can later deliver themselves, sharing the approach with local hotels in their own countries.

👨‍🏫Educating the next generation about plastic pollution.

Supported by BeMed in 2024, Association TunSea pour la Science Participative ’s project engaged 90 students from 4 schools in Tunis, aged 10–12, through a programme combining awareness-raising, citizen science, clean-up campaigns, laboratory work, and upcycling workshops.

After learning about plastics and microplastics in the classroom, students collected marine samples, analysed them at the Institut National des Sciences et Technologies de la Mer I.N.S.T.M laboratory, and took part in creative workshops. Pre- and post-project assessments showed an improvement of up to 80% in understanding plastic pollution issues.

The project also contributes to research, with a scientific paper currently in preparation based on the macro-litter and microplastics collected during the activities.

The initiative concluded with a closing event bringing together 70 participants, including children, researchers, members of the BeMed Community, and public officials, highlighting the importance of combining education, science, and collective action.
