📅 Save the Date: IUCN World Protected and Conserved Areas Congress 2027

🌎 From 4 to 10 September 2027, conservation leaders, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, policymakers, researchers, and private sector representatives from across the globe will gather in Panama City, Panama, for the IUCN World Protected and Conserved Areas Congress. The Congress is the world's premier forum for shaping the future of protected and conserved areas and advancing effective area-based conservation.

🌿 Taking place at a pivotal moment for biodiversity, climate action and sustainable development, WPC 2027 will help assess progress towards the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, while defining priorities for the decades ahead.

🦜 Hosted for the first time in the biodiversity-rich Mesoamerica region, the Congress will showcase how protected and conserved areas can deliver lasting benefits for both nature and people through equitable and effective conservation approaches.

Why join the OSPAR river monitoring training? 💡

Last month, Surfrider Foundation Europe trained members of a local tourism business founded by kayak enthusiasts 🛶 (Sports and Tourism Association), together with the Municipality of (Bashkia Elbasan) , on how to apply the River Monitoring Method.
This training was a great opportunity for Albanian stakeholders to strengthen their efforts in tackling riverine and marine litter at its source.

🌊 𝐁𝐞𝐌𝐞𝐝+ 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧

On 14 November, INCA Albania and Surfrider Foundation Europe gathered more than 30 stakeholders in to advance the Local Action Plan to reduce single-use plastic pollution in the River Basin, as part of the BeMed+ project.

The day featured:
- Insights from the Ministry of Environment on Albania’s new draft law on integrated management, a major reform aligning national practices with EU standards.
- Presentations of key studies on plastic leakage, plastic dependency, waste management performance, and the role of sports tourism in environmental protection.
- Inspiring examples from Belsh, Berat, and Përmet municipalities.
- Interactive working groups with municipalities, HoReCa actors, students, NGOs, and sports representatives to refine the draft Action Plan.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝: promoting tap-water consumption, reducing plastic bottles in HoReCa, improving waste separation, engaging sports associations, and strengthening awareness campaigns.

The updated Action Plan will be finalised by the end of the year, with implementation starting in 2026.

On Friday 14th of November, more than 30 stakeholders came together in Elbasan to co-build the BeMed+ Local Action Plan, from reducing single-use plastics to awareness raising and waste separation.
