PEACE IS SOMETHING WE SEED : Everyday - by Everyone - Anywhere
Not only when there is war.
Not only when the world is watching.
And not only by those who hold power.
Peace is seeded every day — in how we speak to one another, how we respond to disagreement, how we treat those who are different from us, and whether we choose dialogue over division, how we take care for ourselves and our loved once.
For 22 years, Peace Volunteering Network/ PVN has tried to plant these seeds in Albania and beyond.
Through thousands of young people, youth workers, educators, activists, volunteers who have volunteered, learned, travelled, questioned, debated and crossed cultural and social boundaries.
Through communities that have opened spaces for participation and solidarity.
Through educators, volunteers, civil society organisations, institutions and international partners who have believed that cooperation is possible even when perspectives differ.
And through a simple conviction that has stayed with us from the beginning: lasting peace is built by people- us- you.
But today should also be a moment of honesty.
We live in a time when conflict and division are again shaping the lives of millions. Polarisation is entering our communities and our public conversations. Hate and discrimination can spread faster than understanding. Inequality, exclusion and the feeling of not being heard continue to weaken trust between people and institutions.
Peace cannot mean simply asking people to be peaceful while ignoring the conditions that produce anger, exclusion, fear and conflict.
It requires us to address their roots.
It requires institutions that listen and protect human dignity.
Civil society that remains courageous, independent and able to build bridges.
Communities that refuse to turn differences into enemies.
Education that teaches young people not only what to think, but how to listen, question and engage with one another.
And citizens willing to take responsibility for the spaces around them.
Because peace is not somebody else’s responsibility.
A municipality can seed peace by making people feel heard.
A school can seed peace by creating belonging.
An organisation can seed peace by bringing people who disagree into the same room.
A journalist can seed peace through responsible and truthful communication.
A young person can seed peace by challenging prejudice.
A volunteer can seed peace simply by showing another human being: you matter.
And each of us can seed peace in our families, workplaces, neighbourhoods and everyday choices.
This International Day of Peace, our message from PVN is therefore not simply “hope for peace.”
It is a call to invest in it.
Invest in dialogue.
Invest in young people.
Invest in volunteering and civic participation.
Invest in communities.
Invest in human dignity.
Invest in the difficult conversations that allow us to disagree without dehumanising one another.
Invest in LOVE
After 22 years, we know that one project, one organisation or one generation cannot build peace alone.
But we also know something else:
Every seed matters.
And when institutions, civil society, communities and ordinary people choose to plant those seeds together, peace stops being only an ideal.
It becomes something we build.
Something we practise.
Something we pass on.
