Celebrating Insightful Essays and Youth Perspectives ✨
Over the weekend, WDN Albania and Assist Kosovo concluded the Award Ceremony of the essay competition supported by the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), highlighting powerful reflections by young authors on culture, regional cooperation, and European integration in the Western Balkans.
🏆 First Prize Winners
Oriada Dajko impressed the jury with an essay exploring the role of cultural heritage in youth engagement in society, highlighting how education, creativity, and intergenerational dialogue can empower young people as active citizens.
Oriada is a journalist and media and cultural project coordinator whose work focuses on human rights, gender equality, minorities, and collective memory, with publications in both Albanian and international media.
Sindi Hotaj presented a thought-provoking essay on youth and regional cooperation in the Western Balkans, challenging inherited narratives and emphasizing the role of dialogue and youth-to-youth connection in building trust across the region.
She has studied International Relations and currently works as an editor for an international media outlet, with a strong academic background in human rights and humanitarian law.
Leonita Memeti addressed cultural diversity and European integration, focusing on human rights, post-conflict reconciliation, and the importance of inclusive narratives for Kosovo’s European path.
Originally from Kosovo and now based in the United States, Leonita is pursuing studies in Criminal Justice, Global Studies, and Human Rights, with research interests centered on survivor-centered justice and peacebuilding.
🎖️ Special Recognition Awards
The Evaluation Committee also granted symbolic awards to three authors in recognition of the distinct strengths of their essays:
Xhesilda Zeqiri – Literary Talent Award, for expressive power and narrative sensitivity.
Markela Popshini – Critical Thinking Award, for analytical depth and clarity of argumentation.
Arita Sverka – Civic Engagement Award, for a responsible, reflective, and socially engaged approach.
The ceremony opened with welcoming remarks by Visare Berisha, Executive Director of ASSIST Kosovo, who emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and youth engagement in shaping a more connected Western Balkans.
We were also honored to have Ms. Mirela Alhasani, Jury member and moderator, whose thoughtful moderation enriched the discussion and reflection around the essays.

The Western Balkans Youth Cultural Fund is a multi-year project of RYCO, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, and focuses on cultural practitioners and civil society organizations working with youth and culture in the Western Balkans.
