Wetlands are among the world’s most valuable ecosystems - providing clean water, supporting biodiversity, reducing disaster risks, and sustaining livelihoods for millions of people. But wetlands are also living knowledge systems, shaped and protected for generations by communities whose lives are closely connected to land and water.
This year’s theme, “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: celebrating cultural heritage,” reminds us that conservation is strongest when science and traditional knowledge work hand in hand 🤝
On this occasion, IUCN highlights its collaboration with The Convention on Wetlands through the newly published brochure “IUCN–Ramsar Collaboration: Supporting the Wise Use of Wetlands,” showcasing how science, policy and community action come together to safeguard wetlands across regions.
From strengthening wetland governance and cooperation in Central Asia, to supporting conservation efforts at Lake Ohrid and the Buna River in the Western Balkans, and advancing integrated management of Ramsar wetlands in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan through a approach, IUCN works with governments and communities to ensure wetlands continue to deliver benefits for both nature and people.
