For the first time in Albania, an autologous stem cell transplant is performed at the Hematology Service of the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital (although late compared to other countries).

Today we would like to pay tribute to Professor Jacques-Louis Binet, who sadly passed away on December 17, 2024. Professor Binet was a pioneer in clinical and biological research and a leading personality in hematology. He received international recognition for describing the prognostic classification of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), unifying French clinicians to collaborate on producing numerous therapeutic protocols that improved the lives of patients and which were published in high-ranking international journals, and launching the first workshop on CLL (iwCLL) in Paris, 1979.

He trained many students and taught them not only how to administer care, but also respect for the patient, listening, and empathy. Prof Binet also supported gender equality at an early stage, appointing more female academics than men throughout his career, who later succeeded him in the laboratory and in the clinic.
