World Migratory Bird Day 2026
Migratory birds know no borders. Their long journeys depend on places where they can feed, rest, and find shelter. But how well do we know the birds that pass through or inhabit our territories? And what can we do to ensure these places remain available to them in the future?
These questions were explored in the field, where observation becomes knowledge, and knowledge creates opportunities to protect nature. In Prespa, at Tirana’s Artificial Lake, and in the Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape, students, volunteers, and members of the public took part in bird monitoring, contributing to the collection of valuable data on Albania’s biodiversity.
In Prespa National Park, students from the History-Geography and Biology-Chemistry departments of “Fan S. Noli” University in Korça observed birds along five transects across the Great and Small Prespa Lakes. At Tirana’s Artificial Lake, passersby and volunteers joined the observations, discovering that contributing to nature conservation does not necessarily require specialist knowledge. It starts with observing carefully, recording what we see, and understanding the value of the information we collect. This is citizen science: an opportunity for everyone to contribute to understanding and protecting biodiversity.
In Vjosa-Narta, one of Albania’s most important wetland areas for birds, species recorded included the Great Crested Grebe, Pygmy Cormorant, Black-necked Grebe, Greater Flamingo, Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, and many other bird species. The hundreds of individuals observed highlight the importance of this area as a feeding and resting site for birds.
Yet beyond the numbers and species recorded lies a worrying reality: these habitats are facing increasing pressure and interventions that threaten to deprive birds of the spaces they depend on. In Vjosa-Narta, where the wetland landscape is increasingly under threat, a day may come when some of these birds are no longer seen in the habitats we know today. The loss of these areas would mean more than a change in the landscape; it would mean losing the conditions that allow birds to survive and continue their journeys.
Every bird matters. Every observation counts. The destruction of a habitat could bring their journey back to that place to an end.
