Scidev SCiDEV builds on the portfolio of its largest project, COORP - Collaborative Online and Offline Platform (COORP). COORP key achievements.

The Science and Innovation for Development Centre (SCiDEV) is an independent organization that aims to support and incentivise sustainable, economic and social development and democratisation in Albania and the wider region. SCiDEV works in the following areas:
Democracy and good governance: EU integration, evidence-informed policymaking, digital rights, and democracy, anti-corruption
Media and C

ommunication: Countering disinformation, media literacy, science communication, media and civil society nexus, media development
Strengthening Research to Society Links: Quality of research, citizen science, open access, capacity building, knowledge transfer, and innovation, networking and science communication
Innovation and digital transformation: Digital literacy, digital rights, digital skills, social-economic empowerment through digitalization and innovation, digitalization, digital transformation, inclusive digitalization, Women in STEM. SCiDEV’s primary target groups are: youth, young professionals, researchers, higher education institutions, government institutions, local CSOs and grassroots groups, and media. SCiDEV primarily engages in research, capacity development, advocacy and knowledge brokering, Project Development, Fundraising, Networking, Science Communication, Engagement of Academic Diaspora. SCiDEV brings together a team of project managers, experts and researchers, with complementary competencies and expertise and highly motivated to successfully achieve the goals of projects in higher education, research, innovation, and civil society. SCiDEV is part of the following WB6 and wider region networks: SEE Digital Rights Network, Western Balkans European Social Survey Regional Network, Beacon Project Response Network, and Social Observatory for Disinformation and Social Media Analysis of the European Union. COORP was a project undertaken by the co-founders of SCiDEV, which aimed at supporting the integration of the Albanian research community into the European Research Area, by connecting Albanian researchers locally, regionally, and internationally, and strengthen the quality of research and research skills. COORP was supported by PERFORM - Performing and Responsive Social Sciences – a project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation implemented by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation and the University of Fribourg from 2016 to 2018.

In a short reflection, Enkeleda Bodini from SH Plus (Gazeta Shendeti) shares her experience on how journalism is changing from traditional media toward online platforms, and how local outlets work to adapt despite financial, technical, and resource challenges.

Një koalicion i organizatave të shoqërisë civile ka publikuar një deklaratë të përbashkët duke shprehur shqetësim të thellë për shënjestrimin publik të Kristina Vokos, Drejtoreshë Ekzekutive e BIRN Albania, nga deputeti Ardit Bido.

Gjatë një seance dëgjimore të mbajtur më 8 qershor në Komisionin Parlamentar për të Drejtat e Njeriut dhe Mediat e Informimit Publik, Voko ngriti një shqetësim të qartë ligjor lidhur me detyrimin e transmetuesit publik për të ofruar informacion dhe përmbajtje gjithëpërfshirëse, përfshirë për pakicat kombëtare dhe personat me aftësi të kufizuara.

Ky shënjestrim po ndodh në një kontekst veçanërisht të ndjeshëm, ndërsa qytetarë, aktivistë, media dhe organizata të shoqërisë civile po ngrenë shqetësime lidhur me mbrojtjen e mjedisit, transparencën, konsultimin publik, llogaridhënien dhe respektimin e shtetit të së drejtës, në lidhje me ndërtimet në zonën e mbrojtur të Vjosë-Nartës.

Across Europe, democratic participation is being reshaped by new political, social and digital realities. Young people are directly affected, yet their voices are still too often treated as secondary.

➡️ On 17 June 2026, we are officially opening the ENGAGEUROPE Youth & Democracy Forum in Tirana, marking the public launch of , and bringing together young citizens, civil society actors, academia, media, and policymakers from across Europe and the Western Balkans.

The Forum will explore how young people can contribute to Europe's democratic future through civic participation, EU enlargement debates, digital governance and youth-led advocacy, through two interactive panels, a collaborative youth session, and a local youth dialogue in Shkodra organised in cooperation with Universiteti i Shkodrës "Luigj Gurakuqi".

Domestic violence and gender-based violence remain one of the oldest scourges of our society, but what happens when the focus is placed solely on protecting the victim, while the perpetrator goes untreated?

📌 SH Plus stresses that without treatment for the perpetrator, the risk of violence recurring is high. According to mental health experts, abusive behavior is often rooted in unprocessed trauma, difficulties with emotional self-control, and untreated psychological conditions, factors that, without professional intervention, perpetuate the cycle of violence across generations.

Civic protests in Albania ( ) have shown that local media, independent journalists, freelancers, alternative platforms, and community voices are not peripheral to the media ecosystem; they are spaces of empowerment and early accountability.

This was the key message at the closing event of "Breaking Moulds, Shaping the Future", that brough together journalists, young creators, and local storytellers.

Indeed, as EU Ambassador to Albania, European Union in Albania, HE Silvio Gonzatto emphasized “a democratic society needs independent journalism. It also needs diverse perspectives, fostered by a context which offers equal opportunities”. A panel discussion that saw the participation of Sabina Kodra from AWA - Albanian Woman in Audiovisual, Blerjana Bino from Scidev, Lorin Kadiu from Citizens.al, and local journalist Emi Kalaja, clearly emphasized the importance of the work that local journalists do, the challenges they face and need for continued support, to continue bringing local and underrepresented voices into the public debate.

During the event was also introduced the Gender Equality Policy Manual developed by SCiDEV through the project, which responds to a concrete gap in Albanian media: the lack of internal policies and mechanisms that address gender equality, labour rights, working conditions, workplace safety, and protection from harassment.

May brought a series of significant developments shaping the media and civic landscape in Albania: practical application of journalist safety mechanisms; the shift in Albania's EU accession process from frameworks to measurable implementation, with media freedom among the closing benchmarks; ongoing debates on press freedom assessment and media capture; structural sustainability challenges facing local and independent media; and the role of external influence in Albania's information space.

Mbrojtja efektive e gazetarëve në Shqipëri nuk varet vetëm nga ajo që parashikohet në ligj, por nëse institucionet veprojnë sipas tij, me qëndrueshmëri dhe në çdo nivel.

📌 Që nga dhjetori 2023, projekti "Fuqizimi i Sigurisë së Gazetarëve përmes Bashkëpunimit dhe Angazhimit të Aktorëve dhe Zhvillimit të Kapaciteteve të Gazetarëve në Shqipëri" ka kontribuar në forcimin e lirisë së medias dhe sigurisë së gazetarëve në Shqipëri. Nëpërmjet angazhimit të vazhdueshëm me institucionet, monitorimit të vazhdueshëm dhe mbështetjes direkte të gazetarëve, projekti ka kombinuar ndikimin në politika me zbatimin praktik, duke adresuar njëkohësisht boshllëqet sistemike dhe rreziqet e përditshme me të cilat përballen gazetarët dhe punonjësit e mediave, duke kontribuar në forcimin e dimensioneve politike dhe operacionale të sigurisë së gazetarëve në Shqipëri.

Të dhënat gjatë zbatimit të projektit tregojnë sfida strukturore të qëndrueshme: rreziqet që prekin gazetarët janë gjithnjë e më kumulative dhe sistemike, veçanërisht në mjedisin digjital, ndërsa përgjigjet institucionale mbeten kryesisht reaktive dhe rast pas rasti.

Eksperienca nënvizon rëndësinë e angazhimit të qëndrueshëm që kombinon monitorimin, dialogun e politikave dhe mbështetjen praktike. 📢 SCiDEV, së bashku me 29 organizata të tjera të shoqërisë civile, i bëjnë thirrje Kuvendit të Shqipërisë të sigurojë që zbatimi i procedurës së përshpejtuar për legjislacionin e integrimit europian të shoqërohet me garanci të qarta për ushtrimin e mbikëqyrjes parlamentare, transparencës, konsultimit publik dhe cilësisë së procesit ligjbërës.

Konsultimi publik duhet të nisë që në fazat e hershme të përgatitjes së politikave apo projektligjeve nga ministritë dhe insitucionet propozues, përpara se këto projektligje të aprovohen nga Këshilli i Ministrave dhe t’i paraqiten Kuvendit.

📌 Kjo çështje merr rëndësi të veçantë pas Konferencës së 8-të Ndërqeveritare dhe hyrjes në fazën përmbyllëse të Grupkapitullit 1 – Themeloret, ku vlerësimi nuk lidhet thjesht me miratimin e ligjeve, por me krijimin e një historiku të qëndrueshëm dhe të monitorueshëm të reformave, duke përfshirë edhe zbatimin, transparencën, konsultimin dhe mbikëqyrjen parlamentare.
