CoPlan and Green-AL joined forces with Heinrich Böll Stiftung Tirana for another edition of the Green Sofa series, held within the framework of Civil Society Week 2026, to explore the theme “Activism Between Continuity and Change.”

Dr. Begüm Özden Fırat, Professor at the Department of Sociology in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul, drawing on the experience of the Gezi Park uprising in Turkey, reflected on the often-overlooked outcomes of activism. Beyond immediate political victories, she emphasized the concept of learning how to struggle together—to organize collectively, sustain solidarity, even in adversity.

Oljam Dervishi, Founder & CEO of RESU, complemented this perspective by sharing his own journey as an activist in 🇦🇱, illustrating how lasting impact is built when people unite around a common cause, persevere through challenges, and remain committed to a shared vision.

The event was organized as part of Civil Society Week 2026, an initiative of the National Resource Center for Civil Society in Albania and Partners Albania for Change and Development, celebrating the role and contribution of civil society in strengthening democracy and driving positive social change.

At Green Sofa #17, PhD researcher Ledi Selgjekaj introduced us to the fascinating world of the Pied Avocet, the elegant shorebird and the wetland ecosystems it depends on. Through stories from her fieldwork, we learned about cooperation, care, and survival, not only among birds, but also among the communities and landscapes that sustain them.

While Albania hosts an important share of the European Pied Avocet population, the species remains critically endangered, with Narta Lagoon serving as its biggest breeding site. Their future is closely tied to the future of our wetlands.

The discussion also explored the role of science, conservation, and local communities in protecting biodiversity, as well as Ledi’s own journey in the field of ornithology.

Sometimes, understanding a landscape begins by paying attention to the birds that call it home.

The Secret Life of Pied Avocets & the Woman Ornithologist

What can a small shorebird teach us about family life, cooperation, and survival?

Join us for a Green Sofa Talk with environmental biologist and PhD candidate and researcher Ledi Selgjekaj who will share discoveries from her research on Pied Avocets, alongside her own journey as a young scientist dedicated to understanding and protecting wildlife.

We resumed our warm and cozy Green Sofa conversations with an evening on art criticism, the positionality of the critic, and the complexities of writing about art today.

The conversation moved through questions of how we encounter and experience art, how criticism can engage with reality rather than remain distant from it, and what it means to navigate today’s complex cultural and social landscape. We also dwelled on the uneasy but necessary questions surrounding the relationship between art, the artist, and the wider social and political contexts in which art is produced and received.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this Green Sofa return: for the “qejf,” the “muhabet,” and, of course, the always-necessary post-discussion “meze”. 💚
