Have you heard of Bylis? 🤯

Tucked away in the hills of southern Albania is one of Europe's best-kept secrets. The Bylis Archaeological Park is an absolute treasure, considered one of the best-preserved cities of ancient Illyria.

Founded in the 4th century BC, this once-mighty city was a major political and cultural hub for the Illyrian tribe, the Bylliones. Today, you can wander through its impressive ruins, including:
🏛️ A massive theater that could seat over 7,000 people.
🏺 Rare, ancient mosaics.
⛪ Five early Christian basilicas.
🧱 Monumental city walls that have stood for millennia.

But here's the really exciting part: major conservation work is underway right now to protect and promote this incredible site! With support from the European Union, a new plan is bringing professional restoration, improved visitor facilities, and even educational programs for local youth. The ghosts of the desert still whisper along these rusting tracks. 🚂🏜️

This is the Al Hijaz Railway—built by the Ottomans to unite an empire and carry pilgrims to Medina. Then came Lawrence of Arabia.

His guerrilla campaign didn't win in one battle. He just cut the supply line. Train by train, rail by rail. Speed, intelligence, local knowledge.

But here's the part we forget:

Lawrence wrote about the "two voices" inside him—the romantic fighting for Arab freedom, and the strategist serving British empire. The railway wasn't destroyed by dynamite alone. It was destroyed by broken promises.

After WWI, the tracks never reopened. The dream of a united Arabia was traded away in European boardrooms (Sykes-Picot). Borders drawn by men who never tasted the desert dust.

Why this matters today:

Infrastructure is destiny. What you build (or destroy) shapes generations. Today a new Hijaz Railway—electric, high-speed—rises between the same holy cities.

Beware foreign saviors. The most dangerous weapon isn't a bomb. It's a promise made with crossed fingers.

Terrain still dictates power. Climate, logistics, supply lines—they decide who wins, just as the desert decided then.

The Al Hijaz Railway is a skeleton in the sand. But it's also a mirror.
