World Oceans Day 🌊
Today, we’re celebrating the power of science, conservation, and collaboration across the marine ecosystems we work to protect.
This year, the Redonda Ecosystem Reserve and Antigua Marine Conservation Programmes joined forces to carry out marine surveys around Redonda and within the reserve💪🏾
From installing temperature loggers🌡️ to conducting reef assessments🪸, these efforts provide critical data on reef health, habitat condition, and environmental change, helping to guide conservation and management actions.
In 2023, Redonda and its surrounding seas were designated as one of the largest Marine Protected Areas in the Eastern Caribbean⛰️
As part of this designation, a 500-metre Replenishment Zone was established around the island, serving as a biosecurity buffer to help prevent the reintroduction of invasive species, such as rats, that once threatened Redonda’s unique biodiversity.
As the acting managing agency for the Reserve, we work hard to safeguard both the island and its surrounding marine environment. Access to the island and entry into the buffer zone requires permission to help maintain the island’s ecological recovery and protect its marine habitats🤝🏾
A special thanks to our partners and volunteers who made this possible!
These surveys were also made possible through the generous support of the Arcadia Fund.
