Fact Sheet

About:
The first Rotary Club was formed by attorney Paul P. Harris and friends in Chicago, on February 23, 1905. The 1.2 million Rotarians who make up more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in nearly every country in the w

orld share a dedication to the ideal of Service Above Self. Rotary clubs are open to people of all cultures and ethnicity and are not affiliated with any political or religious organizations. Mission:
The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Core Values:
Rotary's core values, which represent the guiding principles of the organization's culture, including what guides members' priorities and actions within the organization, are service, fellowship, diversity, integrity and leadership. The 4-Way Test:
Rotarians consider the following questions in respect to thinking, saying or doing:
Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Structure:
Rotary is structured in club, district and international levels. Rotarians are members of their clubs. The clubs are chartered by the global organization Rotary International (RI) headquartered in Evanston, Illinois. For administrative purposes, the more than 34,000 clubs worldwide are grouped into 529 districts, and the districts into 34 zones. Membership:
Rotary is open to business and professional leaders of all ages (18 and upwards) and economic status. One can contact a Rotary club to inquire about membership but can join a rotary club only if invited; there is no provision to join without an invitation as each prospective Rotarian requires a sponsor who is an existing Rotarian. Some clubs, though not all, have exclusivist membership criteria: reputation and business or professional leadership may be a specific evaluation criterion for issuing invitations to join, and representation from a specific profession or business may be limited to a percentage of a specific club's membership. Avenues of Service:
For years, Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self has been channeled through the Avenues of Service, which form the foundation of club activity.

• Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.
• Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. Observed each October, Vocational Service Month spotlights Rotary club projects related to this avenue, offering opportunity for clubs and districts to use their professional skills in service projects.
• Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
• International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. Rotarians can support International Service by sponsoring a project in another country, seeking international project partners to support projects in their own communities, or by personally volunteering at an international project site.
• New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities as RYLA , Rotaract and Interact , service projects, and creating international understanding with Rotary Youth Exchange.
