18-year-old Amena’s pregnancy journey took a challenging turn when she faced complications and had to travel long distances for care. A recommendation from a relative led her to the Naib Aminullah Khan Midwifery-Led Maternity Care Centre in Logar, where she found a safe, supportive, and respectful environment.

Guided by a dedicated midwifery team, Amena felt empowered and informed throughout her labour. She safely delivered a healthy baby boy, marking a transformative experience that restored her confidence and health.

“Providing care to mothers and newborns is not just a duty — it is a responsibility to ensure every woman feels safe, respected, and supported,” says midwife supervisor Latifa Mubariz.

Amena’s story, supported by the European Union and the Afghan Midwives Association in partnership with UNFPA, highlights the life-saving impact of skilled, respectful midwifery care.

For Sharifa, living in a remote community in Paktika province, accessing maternal healthcare felt like a daunting challenge. With the nearest health facility eight kilometres away, she worried about her fourth pregnancy.

But distance didn't stop her. Sharifa regularly visited the UNFPA-supported Mobile Health Team for antenatal care. When it was time to give birth, she arrived at the MHT confident and prepared, delivering a healthy baby boy with the help of a trained midwife.

With support from the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, the MHT provides maternal and reproductive health services and helps ensure safe deliveries by providing emergency reproductive health kits for pregnant women and those who have just delivered.

In an instant, flash floods in Nuristan turned Qamargull’s excitement for her fourth child into a nightmare. After losing her husband to the gushing waters, she was left to face the future alone.

But she isn’t alone. UNFPA, through partners on the ground, provided critical maternal health care and psychological first aid to ensure she and her baby stay safe and healthy.

Devastating flash floods in Eastern Afghanistan have left thousands in urgent need of support.

Communities in Nangarhar, Nuristan, and Laghman are reeling from the destruction caused by heavy rainfall. Among those most affected are thousands of women and girls, including those who are pregnant and have just given birth, who now face disrupted access to critical health services.

UNFPA is working closely with partners on the ground to ensure that emergency reproductive health care and supplies, and psychosocial support, remain accessible to those who need them.

Reproductive health supplies, dignity kits, and maternal health support are on standby for immediate deployment. Our Emergency Response Teams are supporting rapid assessments and have already deployed psychosocial support teams and ambulances to the worst-hit areas like Parun to provide critical, survivor-centered care.

We are committed to standing with the women and girls of Afghanistan during this crisis, ensuring their dignity, safety, and health remain a priority.

Midwives are transforming maternal care in 🇦🇫 At our Midwife-Led Maternity Care Centres (MLMCCs) in Kabul and Logar, we prioritize women’s choices and comfort throughout the birthing process.

From January to June of this year alone, these MLMCCs supported by EU in Afghanistan have provided essential care to over 53,000 women and supported more than 4,000 safe deliveries.
