Community-Based Disaster Preparedness and Anticipatory Action Activities Successfully Conducted in Momandara District, Nangarhar 🌍🤝

AREP successfully conducted a series of intensive community-based field activities in Hazarnaw, Gardi, and Bila villages of Momandara District, Nangarhar Province, under the DANIDA Flex Project, aimed at strengthening local disaster preparedness, resilience, and anticipatory action mechanisms.

The activities included Village Disaster Management Planning (VDMP), Participatory Hazard Risk Mapping (PHRM), DRR kit usage simulations, Community Priority Action Identification (CPAI), and Stakeholder Anticipatory Action Validation (SAAV) workshops. These processes were designed to actively engage communities in identifying hazards, vulnerabilities, capacities, and priority early actions tailored to their local context.

More than 1,250 participants, including men, women, children, and people with disabilities, actively took part in the sessions. Communities were engaged through highly participatory approaches, including ground-based hazard mapping using different colors, group discussions, simulations, and practical demonstrations. Special attention was given to inclusion, ensuring the voices and needs of vulnerable groups were reflected throughout the planning and validation processes.

As part of the technical component, the data collected from the field-level participatory exercises were further processed and transformed into digital hazard and DRR maps using ArcGIS, in collaboration with an engineering consultancy. These maps will serve as critical tools for evidence-based planning, anticipatory action protocols, and future risk-informed interventions.

The implementation of VDMP, PHRM, CPAI, and SAAV strengthened community ownership, improved understanding of disaster risks, enhanced preparedness capacities, and ensured alignment between community priorities and stakeholder-supported anticipatory actions.

AREP remains committed to supporting communities through inclusive, practical, and locally driven approaches to disaster risk reduction and anticipatory action, in close collaboration with partners and stakeholders.
