As UNESCO and Japan celebrate 75 years of partnership, we recognize more than two decades of collaboration in Afghanistan to safeguard cultural heritage, strengthen communities and build resilience.

From preserving Afghanistan's tangible and intangible cultural heritage to supporting its transmission to future generations, Japan has been a steadfast partner in UNESCO's work across the country.

A lasting legacy of this partnership is the rehabilitation of 16 traditional Karez water management networks in 2025-2026. With the support of Japan, UNESCO rehabilitated 36.89 kilometres of these centuries-old systems, directly benefiting 1,731 households while creating employment and livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Karez are more than historic water channels; they are living heritage, reflecting generations of knowledge, craftsmanship and sustainable water management. Their rehabilitation demonstrates how investing in culture can also improve livelihoods and strengthen communities.

Together, UNESCO and Japan show that safeguarding heritage is not only about protecting the past; it is also about investing in a more resilient future.

Culture lives through the people who practice it every day.

Thanks to the support of Italy through the Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (STFA), the project has been launched in Bamiyan.

The project supports the improvement of living conditions in community-held assets, entrepreneurship in the field of Cultural Industries, and providing employment opportunities.

Following the devastating earthquake in November 2025, UNESCO carried out a comprehensive technical assessment of the Blue Mosque in Mazar-i Sharif to evaluate the damage sustained by this iconic monument.

Supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, the assessment examined the mosque's structural stability, identified priority conservation actions, and used drone surveys to document its current state of conservation. This technical information provides an essential foundation for planning future conservation work, ensuring that interventions are informed by accurate data and a thorough understanding of the monument's needs.

Cultural heritage is a source of national identity and must be preserved. Through technical expertise and careful documentation, UNESCO is supporting efforts to safeguard Afghanistan's rich cultural heritage for present and future generations.
