To support communities affected by the recent earthquake, Future Generations Afghanistan has successfully completed a short-term Emergency Quick Response Project in Nurgal and Sawkai districts of Kunar Province.
The project prioritized the restoration of critical community infrastructure and livelihoods through road rehabilitation, construction of protection walls and canal rehabilitation.
These activities improved access and irrigation systems while creating short-term employment opportunities for 1,000 unskilled laborers over a two-month period.
To further strengthen household resilience, targeted livelihood support was provided:
• 118 vulnerable female-headed households received local goats, animal feed, vaccinations, and practical livestock management training.
• 400 farmers were supported with metal silos to enhance food storage, alongside the distribution of 28 small hand tractors across 14 villages in Nurgal and Sawkai districts.
This integrated response enabled communities to recover more rapidly, restore productive assets, and build resilience in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The recent earthquake in Kunar province has left entire villages in Nurgal and Chawkay districts reduced to rubble. Survivors now sleep under open skies—on riverbanks and in fields—without shelter, food, or safety.
Among the countless heartbreaking stories is that of Umat Khan, a 40-year-old from Kashni village. Before the quake, he earned a humble living driving a rented vehicle to support his family. In seconds, he lost all five of his sons, while his mother and wife lay injured in Nangarhar public hospital. Through tears, he whispered, “My children were my life, and now I have nothing left.”
Responding immediately to this tragedy, the FGA Eastern Zone team visited the hardest-hit communities. They conducted a rapid needs assessment of affected households, then distributed emergency food rations (biscuits) and began coordinating further aid. FGA staff personally delivered each package, ensuring families like Umat Khan’s received not only emergency sustenance but also a message of solidarity when they needed it most.
FGA remains committed to standing with Kunar’s communities as they rebuild their lives. In the days ahead, the team will continue providing assistance so that families who have lost everything can find hope and relief on their path to recovery.

Future Generations Afghanistan
