Calling all Afghan Youth & Children – ALCOY 2025 Creative Contests are now open!

The Afghanistan Local Conference of Youth (ALCOY 2025) is inviting children (ages 10–15) and youth (ages 16–30) to showcase their creativity and passion for climate action through photos, essays, and drawings.
This is your chance to express:
- How climate change affects your community.
- What climate justice means to you.
- How youth and children can help build a more resilient, greener Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan Local Conference of Youth (ALCOY) 2025 is officially open for applications!

About ALCOY: ALCOY is a youth-led platform under Global COY, endorsed by YOUNGO, the official children and youth constituency of the UNFCCC. It empowers Afghan youth to raise their voices in climate decision-making and lead local and global climate action.

Theme: Empowering Youth for Climate Justice: Advancing Climate Finance and Engagement for a Resilient Future

Objectives:

به عنوان بخشی از آمادگی‌های ما برای برگزاری کنفرانس ملی تغییرات اقلیمی جوانان افغانستان یک سلسله‌ از نشست های مشورتی را با آسیب‌پذیرترین گروه‌ها در افغانستان راه‌اندازی کرده‌ایم تا صدای آنان بخش از بیانیه ملی اقلیمی جوانان افغانستان باشد‌.

Women’s Pre-Conference Consultation-ALCOY 2025

As part of our preparations for the Afghanistan Local Conference of Youth (ALCOY) 2025, we are launching a series of consultations with the most vulnerable groups in Afghanistan to ensure that their voices shape the national youth climate statement.

We are honored to begin with our Women Pre-Conference Consultation, a dedicated space to listen to the priorities, concerns, and ideas of Afghan women in the context of climate justice and finance.

🎉We are thrilled to announce that the Green Afghanistan Initiative successfully organized the National Youth Consultation Call on October 27. 🎉

This consultation focused on “Climate Awareness in Afghanistan: Youth Perspectives, Learning Needs, and Expectations.”
The event gathered more than 80 Afghan youth from across the country and began with warm welcoming remarks from Zuhal Shirzad, the moderator.

Nilofar Jamal, Co-founder of the Green Afghanistan Initiative, provided comprehensive background information about the Green Afghanistan Initiative and its mission to empower Afghan youth in addressing climate change impacts in Afghanistan.

Mr. Masoud Bismelzay, Social and Behavior Change Officer at UNICEF, delivered a keynote speech on the objectives of the call, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement in climate action and the development of a climate-resilient Afghanistan.

Participants then joined three breakout rooms to discuss and explore youth knowledge about climate change and its impacts in Afghanistan, youth learning needs related to climate change, and the role of organizations in effectively addressing the devastating impacts of climate change in Afghanistan.

The consultation concluded with closing remarks from the organizing team and reflections from participants. At the Green Afghanistan Initiative, we are committed to strengthening Afghan youth in raising climate awareness and taking climate action.

Day Three of the Afghanistan Local Conference of Youth (ALCOY) 2024 was a great success, leaving everyone feeling proud and inspired. The day started with encouraging words from Ms. Farida Razaqi.‌

Dr. Abas Basir, former Minister of Higher Education and former Director General of the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), delivered a keynote speech on "The Role of Education in Strengthening Flash Flood Resilience," highlighting the crucial connection between education and disaster preparedness.

Following this, Dr. Tahir Shaaran, a scholar at the University of Toronto and former Director General of Atomic Energy in Afghanistan, delivered his keynote speech on "Energy and Flood Resilience in Afghanistan." He discussed how energy solutions can play a vital role in making communities more resilient to natural disasters, particularly floods.

Our participants then joined a networking session to connect with each other and share ideas before joining the final breakout room discussions. During the breakout discussions, participants worked on their policy recommendations and project proposals, which were then presented to a panel of judges.

Ms. Kelly Thompson, Youth Community Mobilisation Specialist at UNFPA Afghanistan, joined the event, speaking about the significance of youth engagement in climate resilience and importance of the LCOY conference in Afghanistan.

The day ended with an awards ceremony to celebrate the creativity and hard work of all the participants. In the children’s competition, the Best Story and Essay Awards were given to Sara Ibrahimi, Kawsar Jahfari, and Sajida Ahadi. In the youth storytelling category, Yalda Faizi, Ayub Ayubi, and Fatima Safdari secured the Best Story Award. Mohammad Imam Mohammadi received the Best Artwork Award. In the youth essay writing contest, Abdul Tawab Khpalwak and Mir Hussain Saifi were awarded the Best Essay Award.

Additionally, the panel of judges, which included Dr. Tahir Shaaran, Ms. Beheshta Taib, Youth and GBViE Program Officer at UNFPA, and Mr. Hamidullah Nadeen, Senior Communication and Marketing Coordinator at Monash University, presented the Best Breakout Room Award to the members of Room 3, which focused on "Post-Disaster Recovery," and Room 4, which focused on "Climate Finance and Community-Led Projects," for their exceptional presentations and ideas.

As ALCOY 2024 comes to a close, we extend our heartfelt thanks to organizers, participants, and speakers.
