1971 is a multi-functional design space dedicated to exhibition, display and discussion on all forms of contemporary design ranging from graphic, furniture to interior as well as interactive design and new technologies. Through a mixture of curated exhibitions and public programmes 1971 aims to become a regional and international design hub in the UAE working in close proximity with local designer

s, architects, schools and universities. 1971 will also serve as an informal meeting point and includes a fully serviced cafe for the enjoyment of the public.

Moments from our opening of “Aeons: New Works by Nourhan Rahhal” and the unveiling of “The Saffar of Coral” by Nidanin at 1971 – Design Space.


The exhibition and accompanying installation were inaugurated by HE Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, Chief Executive Officer of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), in the presence of HE Prof. Issa Yousif, Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, HE Dr Saeed bin Yarouf Al Naqbi, Director of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, alongside a gathering of cultural and artistic figures.



The opening programme also featured Making Across Time, a conversation on sustainability, consumerism, materiality, and craft with Nourhan Rahhal, Nidanin, and Ahmed Alsallami, moderated by Juan Roldan.

لحظات من افتتاح معرض “أيان: أعمال جديدة لنورهان رحّال” وعرض عمل “سفّر المرجان” للفنانين نيدانين في 1971 – مركز للتصاميم.

افتتح المعرض والعمل الفني سعادة أحمد عبيد القصير، المدير التنفيذي لهيئة الشارقة للاستثمار والتطوير (شروق)، بحضور سعادة الأستاذ عيسى يوسف، مدير عام هيئة الشارقة للآثار، وسعادة الدكتور سعيد بن يعروف النقبي، مدير هيئة الشارقة للآثار، إلى جانب جمعٍ من الشخصيات الثقافية والفنية.


كما تضمّن برنامج الافتتاح جلسة حوارية بعنوان “الصنعة عبر الزمن”، استكشفت العلاقة بين الاستدامة والاستهلاك من خلال المادة والتصميم والحرفة، بمشاركة نورهان رحّال، ونيدانين، وأحمد السلامي، وأدارها خوان رولدان.

يستمر المعرض لغاية يوم الخميس 3 سبتمبر 2026 في 1971 - مركز للتصاميم بجزيرة العلم، الشارقة.

1971 – Design Space presents a new site-specific installation by Nidanin titled “The Saffar of Coral”, opening on 7 June at 11:00 am, followed by a talk.
Installed in the terrace of 1971 – Design Space, the installation draws on the maritime history of the Gulf through fragmented wooden and sculptural forms that evoke movement, memory, and gathering.

Installed across the rooftop of 1971 – Design Space, the installation draws on the maritime history of the Gulf through fragmented wooden forms and sculptural seating elements that evoke movement, memory, and gathering.

Curated by Noor Suhail, the exhibition reflects on time, material, and the enduring human impulse to make, unfolding through a layered spatial experience.

انضمّوا إلينا في الجلسة الختامية الافتراضية لمعرض “في حضرة النور”، ضمن مهرجان الفنون الإسلامية في الشارقة (سراج)، والتي تجمع فناني ومصممي المعرض في نقاش مفتوح.
يستكشف المعرض الضوء بوصفه حالةً تتشكّل بين الذاكرة والتحوّل والسكون، ويتتبّع حضوره كتجربة شعورية تُعيد تشكيل علاقتنا بالمكان والزمن.
