1971 Design Space 1971 is a multi-functional design space dedicated to exhibition, display and discussion on all forms of contemporary design.

1971 is a multi-functional design space dedicated to exhibition, display and discussion on all forms of contemporary design ranging from graphic, furniture to interior as well as interactive design and new technologies. Through a mixture of curated exhibitions and public programmes 1971 aims to become a regional and international design hub in the UAE working in close proximity with local designers, architects, schools and universities. 1971 will also serve as an informal meeting point and includes a fully serviced cafe for the enjoyment of the public.

‎لحظات من افتتاح معرض “في حسبان”، بتقييم نور سهيل، في 1971 – مركز للتصاميم بجزيرة العلم في الشارقة، بحضور سعادة أحمد عبيد القصير، المدير التنفيذي لهيئة الشارقة للاستثمار والتطوير (شروق)، ومحمد إبراهيم القصير، مدير إدارة الشؤون الثقافية بدائرة الثقافة بالشارقة.

‎يُقام المعرض ضمن ملتقى الشارقة للخط، الذي تنظمه دائرة الثقافة بالشارقة تحت شعار “ميزان”، ويقدّم رؤى جديدة للخط العربي وعلاقته بالفن والتصميم. شكراً لكل من شاركنا الافتتاح.

‎يستمر المعرض حتى 5 فبراير 2027.

Highlights from the opening of “In Perfect Reckoning”, curated by Noor Suhail, at 1971 – Design Space, Flag Island, Sharjah, attended by HE Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, CEO of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), and Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of the Directorate of Cultural Affairs at the Sharjah Department of Culture.

Presented as part of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, organised by the Sharjah Department of Culture under the theme “Mīzān (Balance)”, the exhibition explores new perspectives on Arabic calligraphy and its connections to art and design. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

The exhibition runs until 5 February 2027.

تصاميم تحمل ذاكرة الحرفة وحكايات الأجيال.

بالتعاون مع مطعم شبابيك في القصباء، الشارقة، يقدم 1971 – مركز للتصاميم مجموعة “ذا كيبرز: آثار الذاكرة” لفنانة الخزف آن ماري لاكروا رافي. تستلهم أدوات المائدة الخزفية نقوشها من الدانتيل العتيق وقطع الكروشيه القديمة، محتفيةً بمهارات النساء المتوارثة وما تحمله من حكايات الرعاية والانتماء.

Designs that carry the memory of craft and the stories of generations.

In collaboration with Shababeek Restaurant in Al Qasba, Sharjah, 1971 – Design Space presents The Keepers: Traces of Memory by ceramic artist Anne Marie Lacroix Raffy. Inspired by antique lace and vintage crochet, this ceramic tableware collection celebrates women’s skills passed down through generations and the stories of care and belonging they hold.

Discover the art of natural dyeing through a hands-on workshop exploring colour, material, and process.

Led by Nourhan Rahhal and Ayesha Fernandes, participants will learn the fundamentals of natural dyeing using plant-based and found materials, experimenting with pigment extraction, fabric printing, and colour transfer techniques. Through guided exploration, the workshop encourages a slower, more intentional approach to making while fostering a deeper connection to materials and sustainable creative practices.

اكتشفوا فن الصباغة الطبيعية من خلال ورشة عمل تجمع بين التعلّم النظري والتجربة العملية، وتستكشف اللون والمادة وعملية الصنع.

تقدّم نورهان رحّال وعائشة فرنانديز مقدمة في أسس الصباغة الطبيعية باستخدام مواد نباتية وعناصر مستوحاة من البيئة المحيطة، حيث سيتعرّف المشاركون إلى طرق استخراج الأصباغ ونقل الألوان والطباعة على الأقمشة. ومن خلال العمل المباشر مع المواد، تتيح الورشة فرصة لاكتشاف خصائصها وإمكاناتها التعبيرية، وتشجّع على تبنّي نهج أكثر وعياً واستدامة في التعامل مع المادة والعملية الإبداعية.

Moments from our opening of “Aeons: New Works by Nourhan Rahhal” and the unveiling of “The Saffar of Coral” by Nidanin at 1971 – Design Space.


The exhibition and accompanying installation were inaugurated by HE Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, Chief Executive Officer of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), in the presence of HE Prof. Issa Yousif, Director General of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, HE Dr Saeed bin Yarouf Al Naqbi, Director of the Sharjah Archaeology Authority, alongside a gathering of cultural and artistic figures.



The opening programme also featured Making Across Time, a conversation on sustainability, consumerism, materiality, and craft with Nourhan Rahhal, Nidanin, and Ahmed Alsallami, moderated by Juan Roldan.

لحظات من افتتاح معرض “أيان: أعمال جديدة لنورهان رحّال” وعرض عمل “سفّر المرجان” للفنانين نيدانين في 1971 – مركز للتصاميم.

افتتح المعرض والعمل الفني سعادة أحمد عبيد القصير، المدير التنفيذي لهيئة الشارقة للاستثمار والتطوير (شروق)، بحضور سعادة الأستاذ عيسى يوسف، مدير عام هيئة الشارقة للآثار، وسعادة الدكتور سعيد بن يعروف النقبي، مدير هيئة الشارقة للآثار، إلى جانب جمعٍ من الشخصيات الثقافية والفنية.


كما تضمّن برنامج الافتتاح جلسة حوارية بعنوان “الصنعة عبر الزمن”، استكشفت العلاقة بين الاستدامة والاستهلاك من خلال المادة والتصميم والحرفة، بمشاركة نورهان رحّال، ونيدانين، وأحمد السلامي، وأدارها خوان رولدان.

يستمر المعرض لغاية يوم الخميس 3 سبتمبر 2026 في 1971 - مركز للتصاميم بجزيرة العلم، الشارقة.

Installed in the terrace of 1971 – Design Space, the installation draws on the maritime history of the Gulf through fragmented wooden and sculptural forms that evoke movement, memory, and gathering.

Installed across the rooftop of 1971 – Design Space, the installation draws on the maritime history of the Gulf through fragmented wooden forms and sculptural seating elements that evoke movement, memory, and gathering.
