Travel Advice for Pets & their Pawrents
(coming from a long term - 19 years - UAE resident & owner of 5 doggies & 2 moggies)
We know that many of our Pawsome Pets Family are feeling very concerned right now about the possible options that would be available, should you wish to travel outside of UAE with your pets in the coming days and weeks.
First and foremost – stay calm, follow official media channels for news, updates and advice. Don't panic or make knee jerk decisions.
If you are stressed, your pets will be stressed - so give them a hug and a cuddle right now 🙂.
Airlines will keep us advised as to any restrictions for pets traveling, over and above any general delays or restrictions being put into place.
In any scenario where a short notice travel requirement might be necessary for any reason, it is critical to consider following at all times:-
• Ensure your pet has a working Microchip.
- Your vet can scan to confirm the chip is reading correctly. It is possible but very rare for chips to stop working, but this is something to keep in mind – your vet should have checked this at your most recent vet visit.
• Ensure your pet is & remains fully vaccinated (Dogs – Rabies, DHPPi, Leptospiroris & Cats – Rabies, Tri-Cat) and your vaccination documents have been correctly and completely updated by your vet, including all information shown on the vaccination bottle label, vaccination given and vaccination due dates (dd mm yyyy).
• All vaccinations must be maintained at all times to avoid a subsequent waiting period, over and above the minimum 21 – 30 days after your pets very first vaccination.
IT IS CRITICAL TO ENSURE ANY VACCINATION DUE DATE IS NOT MISSED (EVEN BY ONE DAY) AS THIS WILL REQUIRE PRIMARY VACCINATIONS TO BE RE-ADMINISTERED & A MANDATORY WAITING PERIOD OF 21 – 30 DAYS BEFORE TRAVEL WOULD BE ALLOWED.
If you do decide that you wish to travel with your pet for whatever reason:-
Consider your short, medium and long-term options & try to avoid knee jerk decisions.
Countries that may be assumed as immediate best option, for example, due to possible accessibility by road, may not in fact be the best option for you due to requirements for travel to and from that country.
To travel to such countries may subsequently restrict your subsequent options for travel elsewhere. This is important to keep in mind at all times when making a decision right now.
For example, we are receiving many requests for travel to Oman by road. In this example, please consider the following:-
• Travel to Oman requires an Import Permit (which can take up to 10 days to secure)
• Oman is considered high risk for rabies. Any subsequent travel from Oman to another country would require a rabies titre test and a waiting period of 3 months in Oman before travel to anywhere other than returning to UAE.
- Even if returning to UAE as a ‘returning resident pet’, the return to UAE would only be possible under “returning resident” status, whilst your pets current UAE vaccinations remained valid. Assuming there is no change in rules for pets traveling back to UAE as ‘returning residents’, which is rare but can happen from time to time.
If reaching out to us for advice on options or confirming a request to travel, please keep in mind that we will do our best to respond & act as quickly as possible. However, we may have external limitations as to what can be booked, charged for or completed, certainly whilst the current situation remains fluid. Thus, your understanding and flexibility at all times, would be required and appreciated.
Most importantly, stay calm, think clearly and follow official channels for advice & guidance at all times.
Stay safe everyone and remember - we are in one of the most well protected countries in the world (imo).
You know where we are if you need us.
