His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V blessed the Community with visits across two events at the Enercare Centre in Toronto on Sunday, March 30 and Monday, March 31, 2026. His Highness also granted a second audience with Community Youth at the Ismaili Centre Toronto.

On behalf of the Community, His Highness was presented with Drops of Mercy, an art installation inspired by the Quranic injunction to be considerate of the elderly, as well as His Highness’s emphasis on compassion and connection across generations.

The installation unfolds in three layers. The furthest is a mosaic of photographs from an intergenerational art activity that took place across Canada. The second layer comprises student pledges to care for the elderly, alongside words of wisdom shared by seniors. The final layer represents the name Rahim, or merciful, in the form of a raindrop, drawing on Quranic imagery of water as a source of life and compassion.

Over the past seven days in Canada, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V met with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Governor General Mary Simon, participated in the groundbreaking of a new Community Centre in Laval, inaugurated Generations Toronto and graced the Community with numerous visits and a held a meeting with Inter-faith Family Members.

As Community and AKDN leaders bid His Highness farewell the Community’s hearts are filled with joy, hope and gratitude.

On Monday, 30 March 2026, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V inaugurated Generations Toronto, a not-for-profit, inter-generational living space in the heart of Canada’s most populous city. Later in the day, Toronto’s Mayor Olivia Chow awarded His Highness the Aga Khan the Key to the City in recognition of the Ismaili Imamat’s decades-long service and leadership to enhance Toronto’s public life, identity and sense of community.

After much anticipation, civic and Community leaders assembled to witness the inauguration of an innovative facility in Toronto yesterday. Generations is a community space in the fullest sense, one where people live, receive care, raise children, share meals and grow together.

Generations is part affordable housing complex, part long-term care home, part health clinic and part early childhood centre - thus responding to some of Canada’s most persistent social challenges: the rising cost of elder care, a chronic shortage of affordable housing and the rising epidemic of social isolation among seniors.

Rather than address these problems separately, the model brings them together under one roof, in this case, across a 60-acre multi-residential campus.

Grounded in Islamic values of compassion, service and respect for human dignity, the Generations model is nonetheless designed to be broadly inclusive. The project welcomes people of all backgrounds, and its programming reflects that intent. A community kitchen, fitness facilities and multipurpose cultural and educational spaces are built to serve not just residents, but the surrounding neighbourhood too.

In his address, His Highness the Aga Khan said, “In the Islamic tradition, care for the elderly is not a social policy. It is a duty…reverence for those who came before us, solidarity across generations, responsibility to the places where we live - these are the ethical commitments that guide the Ismaili Muslim Community.”

He continued, “May this be a place where people find dignity, care, and compassion…where the laughter of children and the presence of elders remind us that a Community’s strength lies in the bonds between generations.”

On Sunday, 29 March 2026, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V granted an audience to Community Youth for the first time at the Ismaili Centre, Toronto, and later hosted an Inter-faith gathering with Community Members and their spouses.

At the Ismaili Centre Toronto, His Highness was presented with an art installation entitled Stewards of the Earth. The design is a digital tree, with each leaf portraying a digital pledge from Community and Inter-faith Family Members from across Canada, describing how they will care for the environment and live more sustainably.

At the Inter-faith gathering held close-by, it was an atmosphere of warmth and celebration of the shared values that unite communities in Canada and across the globe. In his remarks, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V spoke of the importance of acceptance, respect and kindness.

During his address, he said, “I think that these events - and your marriages - are to a certain degree pluralism in action…and so I think it’s going to be more and more important that we remain open, that we remain welcoming and that we share this message of openness.”

His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan granted an audience to Community Youth on Thursday, 26 March 2026 and met with the Quebec and neighbouring regions Community on Friday, 27 March 2026 and Saturday, 28 March 2026.

An art installation, titled Open Door, crafted by carpenters and painted by young artists was presented to His Highness the Aga Khan. This door was accompanied by digital submissions from Community Youth across Canada describing the knowledge they are pursuing and how that knowledge can open doors for one another.

His Highness visited the Illuminated Threads art installation which contains more than 3,700 pieces of traditional fabric from Community Members across Canada. The installation has four pillars, each representing a different tradition with the centre representing a unified Canadian Community, including Inter-faith Families.

Over the past several weeks, as the Community prepared and celebrated, each of these cultures was highlighted through music, dance and cultural exchange so that Community Members could learn more about one another.
