Samuel Eto'o We will never forget!
You could have opted to remain at the comfort of your wonderful homes abroad, running businesses or travelling across the world, yes, because you have all it takes, but you didn't.
You have exposed sides to FECAFOOT that were never public knowledge. Today, everyone claims to be a master of how you ought to manage, because of your transparency. They forget that before you took over, Cameroon football was already in the gutters, same as everything else in the country. People expect you to wave a magic wand and fix things that have been rotten for decades, in a couple of years. You are FECAFOOT president, not a magician.
Even before your election, you fought, and we could all see the joy in you when you were elected president.
We will not forget how many changes you have made in just over two years.
We will not forget how far you carried the country’s name to the world throughout your career.
You are not only the all-time top AFCON goal scorer by chance. You are also not one of the top African footballers of the Year by chance. All that is because of how exceptional you were as a player and it is something we cannot forget in a hurry.
Even then, as a player, you fought for better pay and bonuses for home-based players. You stood for equality and against racism in football.
After 1972, it took 50 years for Cameroon to host the AFCON, and if not of your intervention, it might not have happened. When the rest of the Western world stood against it, saying there was COVID, you fought back.
You are human, you are not perfect. But it seems every day there is something new that the naysayers want to discuss about you, as though you are the leader of the country.
You are not the cause of the Anglophone Crisis, you are not one of the old leaders in power, you didn’t mismanage the Boko Haram war, you didn’t suppress opposition voices calling for change, you didn’t kill or endanger the lives of journalists, you have not suppressed press freedom (something I strongly stand for), you are not the Minister of Labour and social security... I can go on and on.
You have NEVER said in public or in private that you want to become president. You are simply and agent of change and people like you are subject to public lynching in our country, Cameroon, unfortunately.
We appreciate you Eto’o, I particularly do, and we will NEVER FORGET.
Thank you, and God bless you and your family always 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾😍
