The Farjam Foundation The Farjam Foundation is a private foundation fostering a dialogue between East and West

The Farjam foundation, which is completely free to the public, is proud to have presented up to now 26 curated exhibitions with art from every corner of the globe, paintings and videos that will pique your interest, installations, sculptures, and antiquities from Islamic art through the ages, located at the leading financial hub for the Middle East, Africa and South Asia— the Dubai International Financial Center. Since its founding in 2008, our foundation has aspired to be more than a cache of rare and beautiful objects from our private collection. Each day, Islamic and western heritage comes alive at the DIFC through our educational programs, including lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and an annual art camp hosted by local artists, scholars, and curators. Propelled by our values of education for all and philanthropy, we strive to fill the gap between the public and private cultural sectors to shape the future of private art education and outreach in the UAE. Our hands-on work with local universities, colleges, schools, cultural organizations, Islamic art departments of leading institutions, and museums including the British Museum, aims to engage an international community to support, understand, and appreciate Middle Eastern visual arts from antiquity through to the contemporary art of today. Our hope is to surprise, delight, and reveal new ideas and unforeseen connections across time and across cultures.

Nowruz Mubarak from The Farjam Foundation

As the season of renewal unfolds, we embrace Nowruz with joy, reflection, and hope for the year ahead.

This exquisite Safavid-era painting from Isfahan, Iran (1620s) beautifully embodies the spirit of celebration—depicting a kneeling youth offering a cup of wine in an elegant gesture of hospitality and festivity. The work is attributed to Riza-yi ʿAbbasi, the leading painter at the court of Shah ʿAbbas I, whose refined figures and rich details defined the Isfahan style of the early 17th century.

Artwork Details:
“A Drawing of a Kneeling Youth Holding a Cup and Bottle”
Iran, Isfahan, 1620s
Opaque watercolor, ink, and gold on paper, 18.8 x 10.7 cm

May this Nowruz bring you happiness, harmony, and inspiration, just as art and history continue to connect us across time.

نوروزتان پیروز و دلهایتان شادمان
Wishing you a year filled with light, beauty, and creativity.

A standing-room-only crowd, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, graced the Auditorium of the Louvre Abu Dhabi on November 20 to hear the distinguished panel of scholars who had authored The Farjam Collection Masterpieces (pub Sept 2024, Yale University Press) speak about the Islamic and Modern and Contemporary content of this 4-volume publication.
The launch of these books was warmly welcomed by museum director Manuel Rabate, and
the contributing scholars as an invaluable resource for research and public education, and also as testament to the extraordinary heritage of the region. Moderated by Dr Venetia Porter, Emeritus Fellow of the British Museum, the panel included Dr Linda Komaroff of LACMA, Dr Nada Shabout Professor of Art History at University of North Texas, Dr Mariet Westermann Director of the Guggenheim Museum, and Dr Julian Raby, former Director at the Smithsonian.

A key point made was the importance of private collections for the complementary study of art, given the present limitations being experienced at national institutions. More than ever, private foundations and initiatives should be seen as allies not rivals of large institutions, and the role of the private collector utilized and celebrated.

“Arab Presences” at Abu Dhabi Art (Auditorium) assembled from the Farjam Collection, and curated by Morad Montazami, offers a new reading of (post-)colonial dynamics throughout the 20th century amongst artists from Arab countries residing in Paris as a training ground in the early twentieth century. The exhibition highlights both artists included in the original Paris exhibition and others that were absent. This will be the first ever presentation of such a significant historical subject in the GCC.
Don’t miss the opportunity to view, and purchase the English translation of the show’s catalogue, as well as the 4-volume Yale University Press publication of Masterpieces from the Farjam Collection.

We look forward to welcoming you to Abu Dhabi Art 2024.
The fair will be open to the public from 20 to 24 November 2024
from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM daily.
