☀️ HEAT STROKE REMINDER: Stay Safe as the Summer Season Comes In! ☀️

As temperatures continue to rise, everyone is encouraged to take extra precautions to prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

💧 Protect Yourself from the Heat

✅ Drink plenty of water throughout the day
✅ Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during peak hours
✅ Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
✅ Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
✅ Use sunscreen and wear a hat when outdoors
✅ Never leave children, older adults, or pets inside parked vehicles

⚠️ Watch for Warning Signs of Heat Stroke

• Severe headache
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Extreme weakness or fatigue
• Confusion or altered mental status
• Hot, flushed skin
• Rapid pulse or difficulty breathing
• Fainting or loss of consciousness

🚨 HEAT STROKE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY

If someone shows signs of heat stroke:

1️⃣ Move the person to a cool or shaded area
2️⃣ Remove excess clothing
3️⃣ Apply cool water, cold compresses, or ice packs to the neck, armpits, and groin
4️⃣ Fan the person to help lower body temperature
5️⃣ Call emergency medical services immediately

Stay hydrated. Stay cool. Stay safe.

🌞 Let’s work together to keep our families, colleagues, and communities protected this summer season.

awareness campaign

Dengue Fever is a viral infection spread primarily by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, especially Aedes aegypti. It is common in tropical and subtropical countries, including many parts of Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear 4–10 days after a mosquito bite and may include:

* High fever
* Severe headache
* Pain behind the eyes
* Muscle and joint pain (“breakbone fever”)
* Nausea and vomiting
* Skin rash
* Fatigue and weakness

Warning Signs of Severe Dengue

Seek immediate medical care if a person develops:

* Severe abdominal pain
* Persistent vomiting
* Bleeding gums or nose
* Blood in vomit or stool
* Difficulty breathing
* Extreme weakness or restlessness

Severe dengue can lead to:

* Shock
* Severe bleeding
* Organ failure

How Dengue Spreads

Dengue is transmitted through mosquito bites — not directly from person to person.

Prevention

There is no specific antiviral cure for dengue, so prevention is very important:

* Remove stagnant water where mosquitoes breed
* Use mosquito repellents
* Wear long sleeves and pants
* Use window screens and mosquito nets

Treatment

Most cases improve with:

* Rest
* Hydration
* Paracetamol/acetaminophen for fever

Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin, or NSAIDs unless advised by a doctor because they may increase bleeding risk.

Nursing / Healthcare Key Points

* Monitor for dehydration and bleeding
* Check platelet count and hematocrit trends
* Encourage oral fluids
* Watch closely during the “critical phase” (usually after fever subsides)

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare but severe viral infection caused by the Ebola virus. It is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease that can affect humans and some animals.

The disease was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

How Ebola Spreads

Ebola spreads through direct contact with:

* Blood or body fluids (vomit, diarrhea, urine, saliva, sweat, semen)
* Contaminated needles or medical equipment
* Infected animals such as bats or primates
* Surfaces contaminated with body fluids

Ebola is NOT spread through air like common colds or flu.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear 2–21 days after exposure and may include:

* Sudden high fever
* Severe weakness and fatigue
* Headache
* Muscle pain
* Sore throat
* Vomiting and diarrhea
* Abdominal pain
* Rash
* Unexplained bleeding or bruising (late stage)

Why Ebola is Dangerous

Ebola can lead to:

* Severe dehydration
* Organ failure
* Shock
* Internal and external bleeding
* Death if not treated promptly

Diagnosis

Healthcare providers diagnose Ebola using laboratory tests such as:

* PCR testing
* Ebola virus antigen testing
* Serology tests

Treatment

There is no simple cure, but early supportive treatment greatly improves survival:

* IV fluids and electrolyte replacement
* Oxygen support
* Blood pressure management
* Treatment of secondary infections
* Intensive monitoring

Some approved monoclonal antibody treatments are also used in certain outbreaks.

Prevention

Key prevention measures include:

* Strict infection prevention and control (IPC)
* Proper use of PPE
* Hand hygiene
* Isolation of infected patients
* Safe burial practices
* Avoiding contact with infected body fluids

Important for Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers should always follow:

* Standard Precautions
* Contact and Droplet Precautions
* Proper donning and doffing of PPE
* Immediate reporting of suspected cases

Ebola requires rapid identification, isolation, and coordinated public health response to prevent outbreaks.

Hantavirus is commonly transmitted through:

* Inhaling contaminated dust particles from rodent urine or f***s
* Touching contaminated surfaces then touching the nose or mouth
* Rodent bites (rare)
* Exposure to rodent-infested areas such as storage rooms, farms, cabins, and poorly ventilated spaces

It is primarily associated with rodents such as:

* Deer mice
* Rats
* Field mice

Types of Hantavirus Disease

1. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS)

More common in the Americas and mainly affects the lungs.

2. Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS)

More common in Asia and Europe and mainly affects the kidneys.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear 1–8 weeks after exposure and may include:

Early Symptoms

* Fever
* Fatigue
* Muscle aches
* Headache
* Chills
* Dizziness
* Nausea and vomiting
* Abdominal pain

Severe Symptoms

* Cough
* Shortness of breath
* Pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs)
* Hypotension and shock
* Respiratory failure

Why Hantavirus is Dangerous

Severe cases can rapidly progress to:

* Acute respiratory distress
* Cardiopulmonary failure
* Kidney failure
* Shock

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome can have a high mortality rate if not recognized early.

Diagnosis

Healthcare providers may diagnose hantavirus using:

* Serology for hantavirus antibodies
* PCR testing
* Chest X-ray showing bilateral infiltrates
* CBC showing thrombocytopenia or hemoconcentration

Treatment

There is no specific cure, but supportive management is critical:

* ICU monitoring
* Oxygen therapy
* Mechanical ventilation if needed
* Careful fluid management
* Hemodynamic support

Early recognition and intensive supportive care improve survival.

Prevention

Key preventive measures include:

* Avoid contact with rodents and rodent droppings
* Seal holes and entry points in homes
* Properly clean rodent-infested areas using disinfectants
* Avoid sweeping dry rodent waste (can aerosolize the virus)
* Use gloves and masks during cleanup

Important for Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers should:

* Maintain standard infection prevention precautions
* Use appropriate PPE during suspected cases
* Quickly identify respiratory distress symptoms
* Educate communities about rodent control and environmental hygiene

Hantavirus is uncommon but potentially fatal, making early recognition and prevention extremely important.
